Chapter 23 - Echoes of a Monster

Across town, Maya walked out of her high school, chatting happily with her group of close friends.

She was wearing a bright yellow sweater, a stark contrast to the dark, baggy clothes she used to hide behind.

She was discussing her upcoming graduation speech, her face glowing with genuine excitement for the future.

However, as she walked toward the student parking lot, a strange, creeping sensation began to crawl up the back of her neck.

It was a feeling she had not experienced in three years, a primal instinct warning her that a predator was nearby.

She stopped mid-sentence, her smile fading slightly as she casually glanced over her shoulder.

The parking lot was full of noisy teenagers and departing school buses, looking completely normal to the untrained eye.

But Maya’s eyes were trained by severe trauma, and she immediately noticed what was out of place.

Parked across the street, half-hidden under the shade of a large oak tree, was a heavy, black pickup truck.

The engine was running, and the dark tinted windows made it impossible to see who was sitting behind the wheel.

Maya remembered the safety lessons Arthur had gently taught her during her early days of recovery.

"Always trust your gut, kiddo," Arthur had said. "If something feels wrong, it usually is."

She did not panic, nor did she walk faster to show the watcher that she was afraid.

Instead, she turned to her friends and smoothly suggested they go back inside the school library to study for an hour.

Her friends agreed easily, completely oblivious to the silent, terrifying drama unfolding right next to them.

As Maya walked back through the heavy glass doors of the school, she risked one final glance at the street.

The black truck slowly pulled away from the curb, blending back into the busy afternoon traffic.

Once inside the safety of the school, Maya excused herself and rushed into an empty bathroom.

Her hands were shaking violently as she pulled her cell phone from her backpack, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She dialed Arthur's number, praying that he would answer and tell her she was just being paranoid.

"Hello, kiddo," Arthur answered on the second ring, his voice incredibly calm but tightly strained.

"Mr. Pendelton," Maya whispered, her voice trembling just a little.

"There was a black truck watching me at the school today."

Arthur closed his eyes on the other end of the line, feeling a massive surge of protective fury explode in his chest.

"Listen to me very carefully, Maya," Arthur said, his tone instantly shifting into a commanding, authoritative register.

"You are going to stay inside that school with the security guards until Detective Miller and I come to get you."

Maya let out a shaky breath, tears of pure relief welling up in her eyes.

She was no longer that helpless fifteen-year-old girl hiding birth control pills in a dirty bus vent.

She had an army behind her now, and she knew these two fierce old men would never let her fall into the darkness again.
