Chapter 7

Outside the tall, arched windows of the Saint Aurelia Ballroom, the flashing red and blue lights of federal enforcement vehicles began to paint the ornate golden decorations in erratic crimson and azure strokes. Inside, the heavy scent of expensive white floral arrangements mingled with the suffocating tension of public disgrace. The billionaire guests had pressed themselves back against the marble walls, desperate to distance themselves from the collapsing Mercer dynasty.
Douglas remained slumped in the gilded chair, his head bowed, the white rose boutonniere on his tuxedo now drooping limply against his chest. He looked every bit of his sixty-five years, stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his carefully constructed legacy in less than a quarter of an hour.
"You think this is the end of it, Caroline?" Douglas rasped, not lifting his head as his daughter stood over him and her cowering sister. "You think destroying me... destroying Juliette... will bring back what you lost? The board of directors... the offshore accounts... there are agreements you don't know about. People who won't let the Mercer name fall without a fight."
"Let them try," Caroline answered evenly, her posture rigid, her dirty trench coat sweeping against the pristine marble as she turned slightly toward her father. "I spent three years in the dark preparing for this exact hour, Dad. I know every account number, every shell corporation, and every bribe you paid to keep your empire afloat on blood money."
Juliette sobbed violently against the base of the altar, her manicured fingers clawing at the polished floor tiles. "You're going to ruin us all... you psychotic bitch... they'll kill you... the syndicate won't let you touch those accounts..."
Caroline turned her gaze down to her younger sister, a flicker of dark amusement crossing her scarred features. "Let them introduce themselves, Juliette. I've been waiting for a worthy opponent anyway."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, placing a heavy, authoritative hand on Caroline's shoulder. "We need to move before the press breaches the side exits, Miss Mercer. The federal prosecutor is waiting at the federal plaza downtown, and there's another file in my office that hasn't been opened yet—one involving the offshore trust where the rest of the missing family assets were funneled last Tuesday."

Douglas’s head snapped up at those words, his eyes blazing with a sudden, desperate fury. "What file? What trust? Tuesday was after the subpoena!"
Marcus offered a thin, knowing smile. "That’s right, Mr. Mercer. And the person who signed the transfer authorization wasn't Juliette."
