Chapter 28

The conference room doors opened, and the state attorney general—a distinguished, silver-haired woman named Eleanor Vance—stepped into the executive suite, accompanied by two senior legislative aides.
Caroline stood up from her chair, walking around the glass desk to greet them with a firm, professional handshake.
"Attorney General Vance, welcome to the foundation," Caroline said smoothly.
"Thank you, Miss Mercer. I must say, reviewing your draft proposals for the corporate transparency act has been quite an education," Eleanor said, taking a seat at the head of the conference table as her aides unpacked their briefing folders. "If these amendments pass the state senate, it will fundamentally reshape how private equity firms handle secondary trusteeships and offshore holding accounts. It essentially closes every loophole that corporations like Sinclair Industries exploited for decades."
"Loopholes only exist because people with power prefer to operate in the dark," Caroline replied, sitting down opposite the attorney general. "My goal is simply to turn on the lights."

"And you've certainly illuminated a few dark corners over the past six months," Eleanor remarked with an appreciative nod. "The financial world is still talking about how you dismantled Richard Sinclair's entire portfolio in less than a week without firing a single shot—legally speaking, of course."
"War isn't won by shouting in ballrooms, Attorney General," Caroline said quietly, a faint, cold smile touching her lips. "It's won by knowing where the foundation cracks before the building even goes up."
