Chapter 27

High above the city streets, the executive offices of the Caroline Mercer Foundation hummed with quiet, efficient productivity. The fifty-floor skyscraper that had once been the stronghold of Sinclair Industries was now a beacon of transparency, innovation, and ethical governance.

Caroline sat at her glass desk, reviewing a stack of international grant proposals for burn trauma research facilities across developing nations. Her phone chimed softly with a notification from her executive assistant regarding an upcoming meeting with the state attorney general's office to discuss new corporate accountability legislation she had helped draft.

She locked her tablet, leaned back in her ergonomic leather chair, and looked out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. The city stretched out infinitely before her—a vast, glittering tapestry of light, ambition, and endless human drama.

The ghosts of the Saint Aurelia Ballroom were gone. The ashes of the Mercer estate fire had long since washed away into the soil of the new memorial park. She was no longer the victim hiding under a hospital gown in an underground clinic; she was the architect of her own destiny, standing tall at the apex of the world she had reclaimed.

Her intercom buzzed gently.

"Miss Mercer?" her assistant's voice came through the speaker. "The state attorney general is here for your scheduled briefing on the corporate reform bill."

Caroline pressed the talk button, her voice steady, clear, and utterly unbreakable.

"Send him in."
