Chapter 19

The private office was illuminated only by the ambient glow of the city lights pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows and a single desk lamp casting a harsh pool of yellow light over the mahogany surface. Richard Sinclair remained seated behind his desk, his expression a mask of cool, predatory confidence. Viktor Vance stepped out from the shadows near the executive bar, his heavy frame blocking the path back to the private elevator doors.

Caroline didn't flinch. She stopped five feet from the desk, setting her battered leather briefcase down on the polished wood with a deliberate, echoing thud.

"You're remarkably calm for a man whose assets were frozen by federal order less than twenty-four hours ago, Richard," Caroline said, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the penthouse ventilation system.

"Frozen assets are a temporary inconvenience when you control the board of directors and every municipal contract in the tri-state area," Richard replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of his scotch. He gestured toward the briefcase with his glass. "I assume that's the flash drive containing the master encryption keys to the Zurich subsidiary accounts?"

"It contains something much better," Caroline answered, her eyes locked onto his.

Viktor took a step forward, his hand slipping further inside his jacket. "Cut the dramatics, girl. Hand over the drive and the access codes, or we skip straight to the part where you disappear permanently—and this time, there won't be any hospital basement to hide you in."

Caroline didn't look at Viktor. She kept her gaze fixed squarely on Richard, a cold, humorless smile touching her scarred lips. "You really think you're the smartest predator in the room, don't you, Richard? You orchestrated the fire, you paid off the county coroner, you used my sister as a pawn to execute a hostile takeover of Mercer Holdings, and you thought you could just sweep the ash under the rug."

Richard’s smile vanished. His eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits. "You have zero physical evidence linking me to the Mercer estate fire three years ago. Your sister's hysterical ramblings in a federal holding cell wouldn't hold up in traffic court, let alone a federal murder trial. If you walk out of this building with that briefcase, you'll be arrested for corporate extortion by morning. If you stay..." He paused, his gaze darkening. "Well, accidents happen in penthouse suites overlooking fifty stories of open air."

"Accidents do happen," Caroline agreed softly. She reached out, unlatching the brass clasps of the leather briefcase with a sharp, metallic click.

Richard leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with greed as he anticipated the final surrender of the encryption keys.

Instead of a flash drive, Caroline pulled out a sleek, heavy-duty satellite communication terminal with a glowing red LED light pulsing steadily in the center of the console.

"What is that?" Viktor barked, lunging forward with his hand darting toward his concealed holster.

"That," Caroline said calmly, her thumb pressing down firmly on the glowing red transmission button, "is a live audio uplink broadcasting every word spoken in this room directly to the federal grand jury currently assembled in the downtown courthouse."
