Chapter 29

As the afternoon light slowly melted into the warm amber hues of sunset, the legislative briefing concluded with unanimous praise and a signed endorsement from the state attorney general's office for the upcoming corporate reform bill.

The conference room emptied out, leaving Caroline alone once more in the quiet sanctuary of the executive suite. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the first evening stars begin to puncture the twilight sky above the sprawling metropolis.

Marcus stepped quietly into the room, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on the small table near the window before leaning against the glass paneling beside her.

"Well," Marcus murmured, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "It looks like you're officially reshaping state law now. What's next on the agenda? Running for governor?"

Caroline laughed softly, turning her head to look at him. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Marcus. One empire at a time."

"Fair enough," Marcus smiled, his gaze shifting back out toward the glittering cityscape. "So, what are your plans for the weekend? The foundation gala is next Thursday, and the press is already treating it like the social event of the year."

"A gala," Caroline repeated, a thoughtful, ironic glint in her dark eyes as she thought back to the glittering chandeliers and white satin gowns of the Saint Aurelia Ballroom over half a year ago. "No white satin dresses, no hidden agendas, and definitely no wedding cake."

"Count me in," Marcus raised his coffee cup in agreement. "Though I reserve the right to check the guest list for anyone wearing serpent cufflinks."

Caroline smiled—a genuine, radiant expression that completely overshadowed the faint burn scars along her cheek. She looked out at the infinite horizon, knowing that every hurdle, every betrayal, and every scar had only brought her to this exact moment.

"The guest list is fully secure," Caroline said softly, her voice filled with absolute peace. "And this time... we write the rules."
