Chapter 4 - A Boss's Awakening

A profound wave of grief, regret, and fierce protective rage surged through Dante’s chest. For four years, his brother’s child had been living under his own roof, sleeping in the modest servants' quarters on the ground floor, while her mother worked tirelessly scrubbing floors and dusting furniture just to keep her safe.

Dante stepped forward, closing the distance between them. Without a word, he reached out his broad, muscular arms.

Sarah looked up in fear, but as she saw the deep, genuine sorrow swimming in Dante’s gray-blue eyes, her defense crumbled. Slowly, she allowed Dante to gently take Lily into his arms.

Dante cradled the four-year-old girl against his broad chest. His broad tattooed hand cupped the back of her head with incredible, gentle tenderness, resting his chin against her soft brown curls. Lily didn't fight him; instead, she wrapped one small arm around his neck while holding her worn gray rabbit with the other.

"You've been living in the maid's quarters..." Dante murmured, his voice tight with suppressed anger at himself. "You worked as a servant in my house..."

"I had to stay hidden, Mr. Marchetti," Sarah explained, wiping her eyes with the corner of her powder-blue apron. "The Moretti syndicate still has eyes everywhere in Chicago. I thought if I worked here under my maiden name, hidden in plain sight, no one would ever suspect that Julian's child was living inside the Marchetti estate."

Dante turned his gaze toward Sarah, his expression hardening into absolute, unyielding resolve.

"No more hiding," Dante declared, his voice ringing with terrifying authority. "You are family now, Sarah. You carry Julian's legacy. From this exact second, you will never scrub another floor, you will never bend your knee to anyone, and you will never cry another tear of fear."

Dante raised his hand and pressed a hidden brass intercom button on the grand hall wall.

Within five seconds, the head housekeeper, an elderly woman in a formal black dress, rushed into the foyer. "Yes, Mr. Marchetti?"

"Clear the master suite in the east wing immediately," Dante ordered firmly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "Move Sarah and Lily’s belongings up there. Assign three personal maids to Sarah, and have my personal security team stationed outside their door twenty-four hours a day."

The housekeeper blinked in shock, looking at Sarah in her powder-blue maid uniform, but nodded instantly. "Right away, sir."

Dante looked down at tiny Lily in his arms. The little girl reached out her small hand and softly touched the black ink tattoo stretching across Dante’s neck.

"Are you going to make mommy cry anymore?" Lily asked in her sweet, innocent voice.

Dante’s harsh face softened completely, a rare, breathtaking warmth illuminating his gray-blue eyes. "Never again, little one," he whispered gently. "I promise you."
