Chapter 3 - The Secret of the Marchetti Blood

Dante’s fingers trembled almost imperceptibly as he opened the folded letter. The paper was worn soft at the edges, clearly handled hundreds of times over the years. As his eyes scanned the first lines of dark blue ink, his piercing gray-blue eyes widened in profound, overwhelming shock.

The handwriting belonged to Julian Marchetti—Dante’s beloved younger brother, who had been ambushed and killed five years ago in a brutal war against the rival Moretti syndicate.

“My dearest Sarah,” the letter read in Julian’s familiar script. “If you are reading this, it means I did not survive the night. I know you are terrified, and I know you carry our child within you. You must run from Chicago. Dante does not know about us yet—I kept you secret to protect you from my world. But if the time ever comes where you have nowhere else to turn, go to my brother Dante. He is a harsh man to his enemies, but he possesses a soul of gold for those he considers blood. Show him this letter. He will protect you and our baby with his life.”

Dante lowered the letter slowly. The blood in his veins seemed to turn to pure fire. His gaze lifted from the paper to meet Sarah’s tear-streaked face.

"Julian..." Dante breathed, his deep voice thick with emotion, lower and rasper than Sarah had ever heard it. "This is Julian's handwriting."

Sarah buried her face into Lily’s hair, her shoulders shaking with silent, heart-wrenching sobs. "He was going to leave the syndicate for us," she cried softly, her voice barely audible in the grand marble hall. "The night he was killed... we were supposed to meet at the train station. I waited for hours, Mr. Marchetti. When I heard he was dead, I panicked. I knew the Moretti family would hunt down anyone connected to Julian, especially if they knew I was carrying his child."

Dante stood frozen as the realization crashed over him like a tidal wave.

He looked at four-year-old Lily. He examined her delicate facial structure, her rosy skin, her long light-brown curls, and the sharp, fearless sparkle in her eyes. She carried Julian’s nose, Julian’s chin, and the undeniable fire of the Marchetti bloodline.
