Chapter 1 - The Accusation in the Grand Hall

The sprawling Marchetti estate on the outskirts of Chicago was illuminated in brilliant, video-bright colors. Sunlight streamed through high arched stained-glass windows, casting vibrant pools of gold, crimson, and azure onto the polished white marble floor of the grand hall. Crystal chandeliers hung high above, reflecting crisp light across mahogany walls and gilded molding.

Forty-year-old Dante Marchetti, the single most feared mafia boss in Chicago, strode through the grand foyer. He was a towering, broad-shouldered man with dark, swept-back hair, light stubble along his sharp jaw, and piercing gray-blue eyes that could freeze a man’s blood. His fair, rosy skin stood out against his elegant black suit and open-collar black shirt, which partially revealed intricate black tattoos curling up his neck and upper chest. Flanking him just behind were two tall security guards in tailored black suits, standing silently alert.

Dante was reviewing a leather-bound document in his hands when a tiny figure stepped directly into his path.

Four-year-old Lily Bennett stood fearlessly right in front of the formidable mob boss. She was small and adorable, with long light-brown curls tied neatly with a bright pink bow. She wore a pale-pink lace dress, white socks, and cream shoes over her fair, rosy skin. In her left arm, she clutched a worn, gray stuffed rabbit tightly against her side. With her right hand, she pointed her small finger straight at Dante’s chest.

Dante stopped mid-step in absolute surprise, his gray-blue eyes widening as he looked down at the tiny girl. A few feet behind her, twenty-nine-year-old Sarah Bennett froze in sheer terror. Sarah, a maid in the mansion, wore a neat powder-blue uniform with a crisp white apron and white headpiece over her pretty, exhausted face. Her fair, rosy cheeks turned pale with anxiety as she watched her daughter confront the master of the house.

Lily tilted her head up, her serious little face innocent yet completely accusing, her voice echoing clearly in the vast marble hall.

“My mommy cries because of you.”

Dante’s expression changed instantly. The cold, intimidating mask of the Chicago kingpin melted away into sheer astonishment. Slowly and deliberately, Dante crouched down on one knee, bringing himself directly to Lily’s eye level. Behind him, the two security guards exchanged uneasy, bewildered looks.

Dante looked at the little girl, his quiet voice stunned and raspy. “What did you say?”

Before Lily could answer, Sarah rushed forward from behind. Panic surged through her veins as she quickly scooped Lily up into her arms, turning protectively away from Dante. Sarah’s breath came in ragged gasps, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched her daughter to her chest.

“Lily, come here. I’m sorry, Mr. Marchetti,” Sarah gasped in a breathless, frightened voice, her fair skin drained of all color.

Dante slowly rose back to his full, towering height. Without taking his piercing gray-blue eyes off Sarah, he raised his right hand and silently motioned for both security guards to leave. Understanding the implicit command, the two guards immediately turned and walked briskly out of the grand foyer, letting the massive oak doors click shut behind them.

Left alone in the quiet, sunlit hall, Dante observed Sarah. He noticed how her hands trembled uncontrollably against the pink lace of Lily’s dress. Meanwhile, four-year-old Lily rested her chin comfortably on her mother’s shoulder, her big hazel eyes fixed fearlessly on Dante as her small fingers gently stroked the ears of her gray stuffed rabbit.
