Chapter 6 - The Shadows Closing In

Three weeks had passed since the dissolution of Blackwood Capital.

In a modest, nondescript studio apartment on the far west side of Manhattan, Julian Blackwood sat in the dim light, staring blindly at a blank television screen.

The transition from a multi-million-dollar Westchester estate and a corner office in midtown to a cramped, twenty-floor walk-up had broken him faster than any financial loss could have. His credit cards were all permanently declined. His high-society friends—people who had once shaken his hand and flattered his ego at every charity gala—had miraculously lost his phone number overnight.

Vanessa had vanished within forty-eight hours of the estate seizure, blocking his number the moment she realized he couldn't afford to pay for her luxury apartment lease.

There was a sharp, authoritative knock at the apartment door.

Julian didn't move. He sat slumped on the edge of a sagging velvet sofa, a glass of cheap scotch sweating in his hand.

The knock came again—louder this time.

"Go away," Julian muttered hollowly.

The door didn't open from a gentle push; it swung wide with a solid, metallic click as the master lock override engaged. Two private security operatives stepped into the cramped room, followed by Marcus Reed.

Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and filled with a mixture of terror and lingering arrogance. "What is this? This is trespassing! I'll call the police!"

Marcus walked slowly into the center of the room, tossing a thick manila folder onto the coffee table right in front of Julian.

"You can call whoever you like, Mr. Blackwood," Marcus said calmly, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "Though local law enforcement is already aware of your current status."

Julian stared at the folder, his hands trembling as he reached out and flipped open the cover. Inside were detailed forensic accounting reports, wire transfer logs, and sworn affidavits from former corporate subordinates detailing years of systemic embezzlement, tax evasion, and fraudulent corporate inflation orchestrated by Julian himself to fund his lavish lifestyle.

"This... this is fabricated," Julian stammered, his voice rising in panic. "I didn't—these are regular corporate loans!"

"These are federal felonies," Marcus corrected softly. "When Evelyn initiated the corporate asset recovery, our forensic team didn't just repossess the company—we audited every ledger you tried to hide offshore. You signed every single one of these fraudulent authorizations with your own digital signature."

Julian stood up abruptly, knocking over his glass of scotch as it shattered against the worn hardwood floor. "Where is she? I want to talk to Evelyn! She can't do this to me! We were married for eleven years! I demand to speak to my wife!"

Marcus stepped forward, his gaze locking onto Julian with an intensity that forced the disgraced former CEO back onto the sofa.

"You don't have a wife, Mr. Blackwood," Marcus said coldly. "And you certainly don't have any leverage. Evelyn Hart gave you eleven years of her life, and you repaid her with arrogance, cruelty, and violence in front of her child. Your trial is scheduled for next month. The federal prosecutor’s office is currently preparing an indictment that will ensure you have plenty of time to contemplate the value of arithmetic."

May you like

Marcus turned sharply on his heel, signaling the security operatives to follow.

As they walked out the door and locked it behind them, Julian Blackwood sank entirely into the cushions of the couch, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his total, inescapable destruction finally consumed him.
