Chapter 11 - The Trap is Set

Forty-eight hours after my phone call with Leo, Marcus Reed stood across from me in my private office on the 74th floor of Hart Meridian headquarters, reviewing a series of encrypted surveillance logs on a sleek tablet.
"Your brother didn't heed the warning, Evelyn," Marcus said, tapping the screen. "He took your refusal as a challenge. He’s been in contact with a local syndicate headed by a loan shark named Victor Vance—no relation to Arthur Vance, but cut from the exact same cloth."
I crossed my arms, looking down at the aerial photographs of a dilapidated industrial warehouse in Long Island City flashing on the tablet screen. "What are Victor's terms?"
"Victor doesn't just want the twenty thousand Leo owes him anymore," Marcus explained, a grim smile touching his lips. "Word got out that Leo Hart is the estranged brother of the billionaire majority owner of Hart Meridian. Victor realizes he’s sitting on much bigger leverage. He plans to use Leo as bait to orchestrate an extortion attempt against you."
A cold, analytical thrill ran through me. For years, men like Julian and Victor had operated under the lazy assumption that women in high society—or women with troubled family backgrounds—were vulnerable, emotional targets who could be manipulated, threatened, or cornered into submission.
It was time to teach them a permanent lesson in market dynamics.
"When is the meeting scheduled?" I asked quietly.
"Tonight at midnight," Marcus replied. "Victor’s men picked up Leo outside a diner in Queens. They’re holding him at the Long Island City warehouse until someone delivers a briefcase with five hundred thousand dollars in cash—or until you show up yourself."
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering expanse of the Manhattan skyline as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the clouds in bruised shades of purple and orange.
"Prepare the security detail," I instructed, my voice unwavering. "We are going to Long Island City."
"Evelyn, that’s highly irregular," Marcus cautioned, stepping forward. "Victor’s crew is armed. You don't need to put yourself in physical proximity to criminals. I can send an extraction team to pull your brother out and neutralize the syndicate without you ever leaving the building."
I turned around, meeting Marcus’s steady gaze with eyes as cold and clear as winter ice.
"Marcus, this isn't just about rescuing a reckless addict," I said softly. "This is about establishing market dominance. For too long, men like Julian and Victor have believed that my past, my family, and my femininity were liabilities they could exploit. I am going to show them what happens when a liability turns into an executioner."

Marcus held my gaze for three long seconds. Then, slowly, a deep, respectful smile spread across his face. He gave a sharp nod.
"Understood. The extraction team will be fully operational. We leave at 11:00 PM."
