Chapter 38 - Beatrice's Last Retaliation

The words struck Daniel like a physical blow.
He ripped his phone from his pocket. The screen lit up with emergency notifications from three national news networks, confirming the nightmare:
*BREAKING: Former Vance Global CEO Beatrice Vance Escapes Custody During Medical Transit. Federal Marshals Mobilize Multi-State Manhunt.*
"How?" Julianna rasped, having managed to pull herself out of the damaged SUV, leaning heavily against Daniel’s shoulder as she stared at the silver-haired patriarch. "She was facing four consecutive life sentences. The entire world saw the documents Daniel released!"
"The world saw what the Department of Justice allowed them to see," Arthur said, his eyes scanning the horizon where the distant sirens of the Providence Police Department were finally beginning to wail. "The Meridian Trust holds sovereign debt for three foreign nations. They don't buy judges; they buy the governments that appoint them. Beatrice was never going to spend her life in an orange jumpsuit. Her escape was planned the moment Marcus brought down the boardroom in Boston."
Arthur stepped toward the black, armored transport vehicle his team had driven up the hill. "The Providence police will be here in four minutes. If you are found standing next to six dead syndicate mercenaries with classified Department of Defense patent files in your hands, the Department of Justice will place you and the boy in federal protective custody. And that custody is managed by the very marshals Beatrice just paid twenty million dollars to look the other way."
Marcus lowered his carbine, looking at Daniel. His expression was grim. "He’s right, Daniel. If Beatrice is on the loose with that kind of institutional leverage, the safe houses are compromised. We can't go back to Vermont."
Daniel looked at Julianna, whose face was pale, blood matted in her hair. Then he looked down at Ethan, who was trembling against his leg, staring at the carnage on the snow with wide, traumatized eyes. The boy who had bravely stood at the back of the wedding church and declared, *“Daddy! Grandma said you didn’t want me anymore,”* had been dragged into a nightmare that seemed to have no bottom.
"Where is she going?" Daniel demanded, turning his burning gaze onto Arthur. "You claim you know every move she makes. Where is Beatrice heading?"
"She’s heading for the water," Arthur said simply. "The syndicate has an offshore extraction platform eighty miles off the coast of Montauk. An international research vessel flying a Liberian flag. Once she crosses into international waters, she is beyond the reach of any extradition treaty on Earth. But before she boards that ship... she has one final piece of business."
"What business?" Julianna asked, her voice trembling.
"The wedding," Arthur said, his jaw clenching. "Beatrice’s entire public legitimacy was destroyed when Daniel walked out of that church with Ethan. She views Daniel’s defiance as the single insult that brought down her empire. She doesn't just want the patent data, Daniel. She wants to see you break before she leaves this continent. She has seized the family chapel on Fisher's Island—the place where you and Clara were married."
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. Fisher's Island. A private, isolated strip of land in Long Island Sound, accessible only by boat or private aircraft. A place of sacred memories that Beatrice had now turned into an execution ground.
"She’s holding someone there," Arthur continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous, razor-thin edge. "Clara’s father. Your father-in-law, Dr. Thomas Evans. Beatrice’s operatives pulled him from his home in Maine two hours ago."
"Thomas...?" Daniel's voice cracked. Thomas Evans was a gentle, retired pediatrician who had spent the last six years mourning his daughter in quiet dignity, sending Ethan handwritten birthday cards every single month. He was the last living link Ethan had to Clara's side of the family.
"If you want to save the old man, and if you want to put Beatrice in the ground where she belongs, we move now," Arthur said, holding open the armored door of his transport. "My high-speed interceptor craft is waiting in Stonington Harbor. We can be on Fisher's Island in thirty minutes."
Daniel looked at Marcus, who gave a single, firm nod. Then he turned to Julianna. "Take Ethan to the consulate in Boston. The French Consulate—Arthur’s old diplomatic contacts can hold him on sovereign soil until this is over."
"No," Julianna said, her voice fiercely defiant as she grabbed Daniel’s coat lapels. "I am not leaving you. And we are not splitting up again. Every time we divide our strength, Beatrice finds a seam. We go together, Daniel. We finish this as a family."
Daniel looked into her eyes, seeing the unwavering courage that had made him fall in love with her in the ruins of his former life. He turned to Arthur Vance.
"We ride together," Daniel said, his voice like iron. "But make no mistake, old man: when this is over, you and I have an accounting of our own."

Arthur smiled a cold, tragic smile. "I wouldn't expect anything less from my grandson. Get in."
