Chapter 26 - The Wolf in the Boardroom

The betrayal hit Daniel like a physical blow. The secure transport, the federal marshals, the illusion of safety—it had all been orchestrated by a man who had spent twenty-five years mastering the art of invisible warfare.

Above them, the gunfire in the chapel abruptly ceased. The heavy steel door at the top of the catwalk burst open, and Marcus came tumbling down the iron stairs, blood pouring from a gash across his temple, his sidearm smoking. Behind him, two of his contractors provided suppressing fire, dragging a third wounded man down the steps.

"Ambush!" Marcus yelled over the roar of the surf. "The perimeter was compromised from the top! Black ops contractors—they're sealing the exits!"

Arthur didn't even look back. With surprising agility for a man in his seventies, he stepped off the concrete dock and onto the deck of the black coastal craft. Two heavily armed private contractors immediately moved into defensive positions around him, their rifles leveled at Daniel and Marcus.

"You have five seconds, Daniel," Arthur said over the hum of the twin marine diesel engines. "Step on board, or the safe house transport crew completes their orders over international waters."

Daniel didn't hesitate. "Hold your fire, Marcus!" Daniel ordered, raising his hands and stepping onto the bobbing deck of the vessel.

"Daniel, no!" Marcus coughed, spitting blood onto the concrete pier, trying to level his weapon with trembling hands. "It’s a trap! Don't get on that boat!"

"Marcus, secure Julianna!" Daniel shouted back, his eyes locked on his father. "Get to the Virginia safe house! If the marshals are compromised, call the Director directly! Use the emergency red file in my desk! Go!"

Before Marcus could reply, the boat’s pilot threw the throttles forward. The massive vessel surged with immense torque, cutting through the churning sea cave waters toward the narrow opening beneath the cliff face. Behind them, Arthur touched the button on his detonator.

A series of muffled, concussive thuds reverberated through the stone foundations. The heavy charges on the outer cave mouth detonated, dropping hundreds of tons of granite boulder and sea rock into the channel behind them, completely collapsing the subterranean entrance and sealing Marcus inside the estate’s bunker.

The black boat burst through the boiling surf into the open Atlantic storm. Freezing salt spray blasted across the deck, the thirty-foot waves tossing the vessel violently, but the craft cut through the swells with hydrodynamic precision.

Arthur walked into the enclosed, heated bridge of the craft, gesturing for Daniel to be brought inside. Two armed guards escorted Daniel into the cabin, disarming him completely and forcing him into a bolted steel passenger chair.

Arthur poured himself another glass from a secured bar cabinet, looking at Daniel with mild amusement.

"You see, Daniel? When you control the board, every move your opponent makes is simply playing into your strategy. You thought you won when you exposed Evelyn at your wedding. You thought you were cleansing the family. But in reality, you simply cleared the board of an incompetent queen so the king could return."

"Where is Ethan?" Daniel asked, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with lethal intent. "If one hair on his head is harmed, old man, you won't live long enough to see that nine billion dollars."

Arthur laughed, a dry, mocking sound. "Ethan is fine. He is my grandson, Daniel. His blood is my blood. I don't want to hurt him; I want to elevate him! I am going to teach him what I failed to teach you: that power is not granted by laws or morality. Power is taken by those willing to do what ordinary men consider monstrous."

The pilot turned from the navigational console, his face illuminated by the green glow of radar. "Admiral, target platform in sight. Submersible cradle is prepped and pressurized."

Daniel looked out through the reinforced windshield. Looming out of the raging Atlantic storm, anchored over the abyssal plain fifty miles offshore, was an abandoned oil drilling platform. But it was no longer an industrial derelict. The platform had been heavily retrofitted with satellite arrays, automated defense turrets, and a central docking bay designed for deep-sea submersibles.

A heavy transport helicopter sat secured to the upper helipad, its rotors still spinning down in the howling wind.

Daniel’s heart clenched. On the catwalk leading down from the helipad, a guard was carrying a small, bundled figure wrapped in a heavy winter jacket.

"Ethan," Daniel whispered, straining against the guards holding his shoulders.

"There he is," Arthur said softly, his eyes reflecting the cold lights of the platform. "The boy who stopped a wedding with a single sentence. The boy who brought the Vance empire to its knees. Now, Daniel... it's time for the three of us to take a dive into history."
