Chapter 19 - The Storm Over the Manor

Forty-eight hours later, the penthouse in Manhattan had been transformed into an impenetrable sanctuary.
Specialists from Mount Sinai Hospital moved quietly through the master guest suite, monitoring Julianna’s vital signs, administering warm fluids, and redressing the lacerations on her feet and hands. Victoria sat by her bedside around the clock, holding her sister's hand, speaking in soft murmurs about childhood memories, helping the shattered pieces of Julianna’s fractured mind stitch themselves back together.
Downstairs in the private security hub, the legal storm had broken over the city with cataclysmic force.
The Department of Justice, armed with Arthur Sterling’s deathbed confessions and the mountain of files recovered from Blackwood Ridge, had handed down twenty-four new federal indictments against Evelyn Vance and her co-conspirators. The corrupt state troopers who had participated in the raid were in custody. Evelyn had been transferred to a psychiatric evaluation wing under continuous suicide watch, stripped of all legal defense funds.
Daniel stood by the panoramic window of the penthouse living room, watching the sun begin to set over Central Park. Clara stood beside him, holding two cups of chamomile tea, her eyes carrying a quiet, bittersweet serenity.
"She asked to see Ethan," Clara said gently.
Daniel turned to her, his heart in his throat. "Do the doctors think she’s ready?"
"They said keeping them apart any longer will do more damage than good," Clara answered. She placed a warm hand on Daniel’s arm, offering a reassuring smile that carried no malice, only profound grace. "Ethan has been sitting outside her door with his drawing book for three hours, Daniel. He knows she's in there. Go bring him in."
Daniel walked down the hall to the guest suite. Ethan was indeed sitting cross-legged on the carpet, drawing a vibrant picture of an oak tree filled with dozens of red-breasted robins. When he saw Daniel, he scrambled to his feet, tucking the drawing beneath his arm.
"Daddy... is Mommy awake?" Ethan asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of reverence and fear. "Is she going to disappear again?"
Daniel dropped down to his son’s eye level, taking the boy’s small hands in his own. "No, Ethan. She is never going to disappear again. She was sick for a very long time, and she went through a very bad storm to find you. You have to be gentle with her, okay? But she loves you more than all the stars in the sky."
Ethan nodded solemnly, wiping a sudden tear from his cheek.
Daniel rose, turned the brass knob, and opened the door.
Julianna was sitting propped up against the pillows, wearing a soft lavender sweater Victoria had bought for her. Her face was still hollow and pale, marked by faint scars near her temple, but when the door opened and she saw the little boy standing beside Daniel, the color flooded back into her cheeks.
Ethan took one slow step into the room, his eyes wide.
"Mommy?" he whispered.
Julianna’s breath caught in her throat. She stretched her trembling, bandaged arms out across the quilt. "My brave bird... come here."
With a ragged sob, Ethan dropped his drawing and sprinted across the room, leaping onto the edge of the bed and burying his small face into his mother's neck. Julianna wrapped her arms around him, pulling him so close it seemed she wanted to absorb him into her very soul, weeping uncontrollable tears of joy, kissing his hair, his cheeks, his small hands.

Daniel stood in the doorway, watching the two people he loved most in the universe finally reunited after six years of lies, suffering, and bloodshed. For the first time in his life, Daniel felt the crushing weight of the Vance curse lift from his shoulders. They had won. The family was whole.
