Chapter 15 - The Alpine Trail

Inside the private office of Vance Holdings' aviation hangar, the wall monitors displayed a satellite map tracking the Hudson Valley corridor alongside encrypted flight manifests retrieved from Zurich International Airport. Victoria stood by the screen, tracing the route with an ink pen, her face pale in the artificial light.
"Julianna didn't escape on her own," Victoria said, shaking her head. "When I saw her in Lucerne, she was barely walking. She was suffering from severe post-traumatic amnesia and localized motor paralysis. A woman in that condition cannot cross international borders without high-level administrative clearance, private medical transport, and millions of dollars in forged documentation."
"Then who moved her?" Clara asked from the sofa, where she sat reviewing Ethan's custody and protection files. "If Evelyn is in a federal holding cell with all her bank accounts frozen by the Department of Justice, who is funding this operation?"
Marcus stepped forward, plugging an encrypted flash drive into the terminal. The screen blinked, bringing up a dossier with a photograph of a distinguished, gray-haired man in his late sixties, dressed in an impeccably tailored three-piece suit, sporting the insignia of the European Steel Coalition on his lapel.
"Arthur Sterling," Marcus stated. "Former chairman of Sterling Continental, Evelyn's primary financial backer during the eighties, and her fiercest corporate rival after their falling out thirty years ago. Our intelligence suggests Sterling visited Evelyn in prison two days before Daniel's wedding."
Daniel’s mind raced through the fractured memories of his childhood. He remembered Arthur Sterling—the imposing man who had often stood on the opposite side of gala ballrooms, glaring at Evelyn with an icy mixture of hatred and unfinished business.
"Sterling lost his empire to Evelyn in the hostile takeover of ninety-four," Daniel said, piecing together the timeline. "He blamed her for his family's ruin. Why would he rescue Julianna?"
"He didn't rescue her out of kindness, Daniel," Victoria intervened darkly, her hands clenching into fists. "Sterling knows that if Julianna Vance is alive and officially deemed of sound mind, the entire trust structure of Vance Enterprises defaults to her as the sole living trustee named in your grandfather's original will. Evelyn drafted that clause decades ago to prevent outside acquisitions, assuming any woman you married would be under her absolute control. If Julianna walks into probate court tomorrow, she can dissolve Vance Enterprises with a single stroke of a pen—and bankrupt Evelyn’s entire bloodline."
"He's using her as a human wrecking ball," Daniel realized, cold fury surging through his veins. "He doesn't care about her health, or Ethan, or justice. He's using my wife's trauma to enact his thirty-year-old revenge against Evelyn."
"And he brought her to the school today to see if she would react to the boy," Marcus added grimly. "Sterling needed to confirm that her memory was returning. The moment Ethan recognized that wooden bird, Sterling knew he had the ultimate weapon."
Daniel turned toward the window overlooking the private tarmac, where his Gulfstream jet stood fueled and ready. Outside, the rain was turning into sleet, tapping like fingernails against the glass.
"Where is Sterling holding her?" Daniel demanded.
"Our highway sensors picked up the Mercedes turning into the Blackwood Ridge estate near Rhinebeck," Marcus replied. "It’s an old, fortified manor house owned by the Sterling family trust. High stone walls, perimeter sensors, private security guards. It’s an impenetrable fortress."
Daniel pulled his overcoat on, his jaw set in stone. "Get the team together, Marcus. We leave now."
"Daniel, wait," Clara called out, rising to her feet and stopping him by the doorway. Her eyes were filled with an agonizing mix of loyalty and sorrow. "If you find her... if Julianna is really alive and she remembers who she is... what does that mean for us? For Ethan?"
Daniel looked at Clara, recognizing the profound sacrifice and love she had poured into Ethan during these harrowing months. He gently took her hands into his own.
"It means Ethan gets his mother back," Daniel said softly, honestly. "And whatever happens next, Clara, you will always be the woman who protected him when the world was tearing him apart. But I have to save Julianna. I owe her my life."

Clara nodded slowly, blinking back tears, and released his hands. "Go bring her home."
