Chapter 20 - The Voice in the Static

Night fell completely over the city, wrapping the penthouse in a tranquil, velvet stillness. Ethan had fallen asleep curled beside Julianna in the master bedroom, his small hand locked tightly within his mother’s fingers, neither of them willing to let go even in the depths of exhaustion.
Daniel sat in the main living room with Clara and Marcus, finalizing the restructuring documents that would dissolve Vance Enterprises into a non-profit foundation dedicated to locating missing children and investigating institutional human trafficking.
"The board signed off on the transition an hour ago," Marcus reported, closing his laptop. "Evelyn’s remaining proxies have capitulated. Tomorrow at noon, the court will formally ratify Julianna as the head trustee, closing the book on this nightmare forever."
"It's over," Clara said softly, letting out a long, cathartic sigh as she looked out over the sparkling city lights. "You did it, Daniel. You brought them all back from the dark."
Before Daniel could respond, the doorbell of the penthouse chimed.
Marcus immediately stood, his hand drifting instinctively toward his waistband. "No one has clearance for the private elevator lobby tonight. Stay here."
Marcus moved cautiously toward the double mahogany entrance doors, checking the encrypted video monitor mounted on the wall. The camera showed an empty vestibule, except for a solitary wooden crate sitting directly upon the welcome mat, adorned with a wax seal stamped with an emblem Daniel hadn't seen in over fifteen years: the old maritime insignia of the Vance family shipping line, decommissioned before Daniel’s father had died at sea.
"Clear," Marcus called out, though his voice was tense. He opened the door, inspected the package for explosive compounds using an electronic scanner, and carried the heavy crate into the living room, setting it onto the glass coffee table.
"There's no postage," Marcus said, frowning. "It was delivered by hand up the private service shaft."
Daniel stepped forward, inspecting the crimson wax seal. The seal bore the initials: *R.V.*
*Richard Vance.* His father.
"That's impossible," Daniel whispered, his blood running cold. "My father went down with his yacht in the Bermuda triangle when I was twelve. His body was never recovered. Evelyn had him declared dead twenty-five years ago."
With trembling hands, Daniel took a silver pocket knife and sliced through the wax seal, prying open the wooden lid.
Inside the crate, cushioned by dry straw, was not a bomb, nor documents. Resting on the straw was an antique, battery-powered reel-to-reel magnetic tape recorder, alongside a single fresh black orchid—the trademark flower cultivated exclusively in Evelyn’s private greenhouse at the old Vance ancestral estate in Newport.
Beneath the orchid lay a small, handwritten note on fresh linen stationery. The ink was wet.
Daniel picked up the note, reading the elegant, unmistakable handwriting aloud in a hollow murmur:
*'You thought Evelyn was the architect, Daniel. She was merely the jailer. Did you ever wonder who ordered her to keep Julianna alive? Did you ever ask why your father's ship truly sank?'*
A cold wave of paralyzing horror washed over the room.
Marcus immediately drew his firearm, stepping in front of Daniel. Clara clasped her hands over her mouth, backing away toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms.
Daniel looked down at the reel-to-reel machine. His fingers shaking uncontrollably, he reached out and pressed the heavy chrome *PLAY* button.
The magnetic wheels slowly began to turn with a faint mechanical hiss. Static crackled through the small built-in speaker, filling the vast, silent penthouse with a low, white noise.
Then, out of the static, a deep, raspy, aristocratic voice spoke—a voice that had haunted Daniel’s childhood memories, a voice that belonged to a man buried beneath a quarter-century of ocean water:
*"Hello, Daniel. You've grown into quite the crusader, just like I hoped you would. Thank you for clearing Evelyn out of my way. Now... give my grandson the phone."*
May you like
At that exact instant, the entire penthouse plunged into pitch-black darkness as the main circuit breakers blew.
From the hallway behind them, the sound of Ethan’s bedroom window shattering into a thousand pieces echoed through the frozen night, followed instantly by the terrified, piercing scream of Julianna.
