Chapter 48 - The Midnight Vow

"Dante, take twenty men and seal the internal blast doors along the subterranean stairs," Luca ordered immediately, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. "Do not let them reach the central elevator shaft. Use the heavy chokepoints."
"On it," Dante racked the bolt of his shotgun and sprinted out the door, barking orders to the vanguard soldiers waiting in the corridor.
Luca turned to his mother. "Carmela, take the secondary bunker beneath the chapel. The armory there has independent life support."
"I am not leaving you, Luca," Carmela said fiercely, gripping her pistol.
"You are going to the bunker, Mama," Luca commanded, his voice softening with rare tenderness. "Because I need someone alive to run this family if the sea wall gives way. Protect the archive. Go."
Carmela looked at him for a long moment, then looked at me. She stepped forward, grasping my uninjured shoulder, her eyes burning with fierce resolve. "Stay close to him, Sophie. Fight like a Moretti."
"I will," I promised.
Carmela turned and disappeared down the secure private staircase with two loyal guards.
The war room was quiet for a brief heartbeat, save for the muffled thuds of distant explosions echoing up through the stone floors. Luca turned to me. He unbuttoned his tactical vest, reached into his inner pocket, and pulled out a small velvet pouch.
From it, he drew a ring.
It wasn't a modern diamond. It was an antique platinum band, carved in the shape of two entwined vipers holding a deep, blood-red ruby in their jaws—the ancient signet of the Rossi-Moretti founding pact.
"This belonged to your grandmother," Luca said softly, stepping closer until his chest brushed mine. The sound of alarms and gunfire faded into the background. "My mother kept it hidden for twenty-five years, waiting for the day the true heir returned."
He took my right hand, his fingers surprisingly steady despite the storm raging beneath our feet.
"I didn't choose you because of your name, Sophie," he whispered, his eyes boring straight into my soul with an intensity that took my breath away. "I chose you when you stood in my engagement party with blood on your hands and defiance in your eyes. I chose you in the dark of the garage. I chose you every second since."
He slid the heavy ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, cool and heavy against my skin.
"If we die tonight," Luca said, "we die as equals. As Don and Donna."
I reached up with my good hand, tangling my fingers in his dark hair, pulling his face down to mine. I kissed him with all the fierce, desperate hunger that had been building between us through every drop of blood we had spilled together. His mouth was hard, passionate, staking a claim that transcended death itself.

"We aren't dying tonight, Luca," I breathed against his lips, pulling his spare pistol from his side holster and checking the chamber with a crisp click. "Now let's go kill these bastards."
