Chapter 37 - The Glass Sanctuary

We stepped across the threshold into a waking nightmare.

It was an exact, terrifying replica of the Old Moretti study. The dark mahogany paneling, the velvet emerald curtains, the towering bookshelves filled with first-edition classics—even the faint scent of pipe tobacco and cedar was painstakingly recreated.

Sitting in a high-backed leather wing chair behind the massive desk was Don Antonio Moretti.

Up close, the resemblance between father and son was chilling. Antonio had the same chiseled jaw, the same predatory amber eyes, the same aura of quiet, suffocating terror. But where Luca possessed a buried spark of humanity, Antonio’s soul was hollow—a void of absolute, narcissistic cruelty.

And beside the desk, bound to an antique wheelchair with heavy steel restraints, was Donna Carmela.

Her head hung low, her graying hair matted with sweat. Around her throat was a thick steel band with a blinking red LED.

"Mother," Luca breathed, taking an involuntary step forward.

"Ah-ah-ah," Antonio’s voice rumbled like distant thunder. He casually adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit. "One more step, my boy, and I press the override. I would hate to stain this lovely rug. It took months to source authentic Persian wool from the eighties."

Donna Carmela slowly lifted her head. Her face was bruised, her lips cracked, but when her eyes found Luca, a spark of fierce, maternal light cut through the misery.

"Luca..." she rasped, her voice trembling. "Do not... do not kneel to this ghost."

Antonio casually backhanded her across the cheek.

The crack of skin on skin echoed through the room.

"Silence, Carmela," Antonio said mildly, not even looking at her as she groaned in pain. "The adults are speaking."

A feral, guttural roar tore from Luca’s throat. He raised his weapon, but Antonio didn't move. Two laser sights immediately painted red dots over Luca’s chest and my forehead from hidden snipers behind the one-way mirrored glass lining the ceiling.

"Drop your weapons," Antonio commanded softly. "Both of you. Or Carmela’s head leaves her shoulders before your bullet clears the barrel."

Luca froze, every muscle in his body coiled to strike, his eyes burning with helpless, agonized fury.

"Luca," I said softly, my voice calm despite the laser burning into my skull. "Do as he says."

Slowly, deliberately, Luca released his grip. His tactical sidearm clattered onto the marble floor. I lowered my weapon and kicked it across the tiles toward Vanessa, who scooped it up with a triumphant giggle.

Antonio leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "Good. You always were obedient when a woman was threatened, Luca. That was your greatest flaw. Your mother made you soft. She poisoned my bloodline with sentimentality."

"You abandoned her to burn!" Luca spat, his fists shaking. "You hid like a rat for twenty years while I carried the weight of your sins!"

"I didn't abandon her," Antonio smiled coldly, his amber eyes glittering with madness. "I sacrificed a pawn to protect the king. And look at what you accomplished in my absence! You consolidated the docks, crushed the Romanos, and tripled the family fortune. You did an exceptional job, son. But now... the master has returned to claim his workshop."

"You won't leave this tower alive," Luca vowed.

May you like

"On the contrary, Luca," Antonio chuckled darkly. "You're the one who isn't leaving. But before you die, I want you to understand the full scope of your failure. Vanessa, bring the documents."
