Chapter 44 - The Ghost Lineage

I woke to the rhythmic hum of an industrial engine and the pungent smell of salt water, antiseptic, and old leather.

I was lying on a plush leather sofa inside what appeared to be the captain's quarters of a massive vessel. Clean white bandages wrapped tightly around my left shoulder and chest. The agony had receded to a dull, throbbing ache, kept at bay by whatever intravenous drip was running into the back of my hand.

Sitting on an armchair beside the couch was Carmela Moretti. She had washed the grime from her face, her silver hair pulled back into an elegant knot, sipping black tea from a porcelain cup.

"Drink," she said softly, offering a glass of water with a straw as she saw my eyes flutter open.

I took a few sips, my throat parched. "Where... where are we?"

"On my late husband’s private yacht, the *Nereid*," Carmela replied, her voice tinged with melancholy. "We are cruising five miles off the Atlantic coast. Dante and Luca swept the vessel completely. We are outside the jurisdiction of Antonio’s corrupt networks."

"Luca..." I tried to push myself up, panic flaring in my chest.

"He is on the bridge, coordinating the counter-offensive," Carmela said, placing a reassuring hand on my knee. "He hasn't slept in thirty hours. He refused to leave your side until the doctor confirmed your fever broke. I had to threaten to shoot him myself just to make him inspect the perimeter."

A faint, exhausted smile touched my lips, but it faded as I looked at Carmela's solemn expression. "Carmela... in the tower... Antonio said things. Vanessa said things. They acted like my presence in your house was never an accident. Why was Vanessa so obsessed with destroying me?"

Carmela set her teacup down with a quiet clink. She opened a worn mahogany lockbox resting on the table between us and retrieved an old, yellowed photograph.

She handed it to me.

In the picture stood two young women in front of a sprawling Tuscan vineyard. One was unmistakably a twenty-year-old Carmela, radiant and smiling. Beside her was another woman—with dark wavy hair, high cheekbones, and the exact same hazel-green eyes that looked back at me in the mirror every day.

"That is Maria Rossi," Carmela whispered, her voice trembling with decades of unshed tears. "Your mother, Sophie."

My breath caught in my throat. "My mother? She died when I was seven... in a hit-and-run in Queens. She was just a seamstress..."

"She was the youngest daughter of Don Bernardo Moretti—Antonio’s older brother, the true heir to the syndicate," Carmela revealed, her eyes hardening with an ancient fury. "Antonio had Bernardo murdered thirty years ago to steal the throne. Maria fled to America under an assumed name, hiding in the shadows to protect you. Antonio spent decades hunting every trace of Bernardo’s bloodline to ensure his claim remained unchallenged."

The room seemed to spin around me. "Then... I..."

"You are not a maid who wandered into our estate by chance, Sophie," Carmela said softly, her fingers gently touching my cheek. "You are blood of the founding house. Antonio found out three months ago. That was why Vanessa was brought in—not just to secure a marriage with Luca, but to quietly eliminate you before Luca ever discovered who you were."

The door to the cabin hissed open. Luca stood in the threshold, his broad shoulders filling the frame, his dark eyes instantly locking onto mine with an intensity that burned the air between us.
