Chapter 29 - The Fractured Dawn

We made it back to the safehouse as the first bruised streaks of dawn cut through the gray clouds over the harbor.
Dr. Bennett worked tirelessly for two hours, flushing the paralytic neurotoxin from Clara’s bloodstream while Elena sat vigil beside her bed. The sight of Elena—bruised, bandaged, but steady as a mountain—stroking my sister’s hair was an image that burned itself into my memory forever.
"The toxin is clearing," Dr. Bennett finally announced, pulling off his latex gloves. "Her motor functions will return within twenty-four hours. But the scarring on her back..."
I walked over to the side of the bed. Clara was lying on her stomach, covered by a sterile sheet pulled down to her waist.
Tears pricked my eyes, hot and bitter.
Across her shoulder blades and down her spine, intricately etched into her skin like a horrific tapestry of burn tissue and ink, was a massive cryptographic diagram: names, Swiss coordinates, account routing prefixes, and an ancient family crest featuring a crowned raven.
"The Castiglione bloodline cipher," Elena whispered, her voice solemn. "Your father paid for this with his life, Sophie. And Clara bore the weight of it in the dark for ten years."
Clara’s fingers twitched against the blanket. She opened her eyes, turning her head weakly toward me.
"Sophie..." she breathed.
I rushed to her side, falling to my knees and gripping her cold hand between both of mine. "I'm here. I'm right here, Clara. It's over. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
"No..." Clara’s eyes widened with a sudden, horrifying lucidity that sent a chill straight down my spine. Her grip on my fingers tightened with terrifying strength. "You don't understand... Mateo wasn't the head... he was just running..."
Luca stepped forward, his face hardening. "Running from whom, Clara?"
Clara began to tremble, her monitors beeping with a spike in heart rate. "Mateo found out... three days ago... that's why he initiated the emergency protocol. He wasn't working for Julian... Julian was being hunted too..."
"Hunted by who?" I demanded, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Clara swallowed, her tears spilling onto the white pillowcase. "The man who ordered the fire ten years ago... he’s back in the city. He didn't die in the car crash, Luca. He faked it."
Luca froze, every muscle in his body turning to solid stone. "What did you say?"
May you like
"He’s alive," Clara sobbed. "Your father... Luca, your father is alive."
