Chapter 27 - THE GIRL WHO WALKED INTO THE DEVOURER’S HEART

The Devourer descended upon Valtherion.

Its enormous wings blocked the sun.

Black lightning struck the city walls.

The people fled toward the river as ancient buildings collapsed beneath the creature’s shadow.

Elara stood upon the palace roof beside Asteria.

In the guardian’s hands floated the stolen white star.

The missing light.

The part of the Devourer that had been separated centuries earlier.

Elara looked toward the creature.

“How do we give it back?”

Asteria’s expression was grave.

“Someone must enter its heart.”

Kael stepped forward.

“Then I’ll go.”

Asteria shook her head.

“The one who enters must carry the six flames and the free souls’ blessing.”

Elara understood.

“Me.”

Kael seized her hand.

“No.”

She looked toward him.

He was trembling.

Not because he feared battle.

Because he feared losing her.

“Every time we find a way forward,” he whispered, “someone asks you to sacrifice yourself.”

Elara touched his face.

“I know.”

“Then say no.”

For a moment, she wanted to.

She wanted to leave the palace.

Find a quiet house beyond the mountains.

Live with Kael and Lyanna.

Spend years learning who she was without the weight of the kingdom resting upon her shoulders.

But the Devourer was moving toward the city.

Thousands would die if no one acted.

Asteria stepped forward.

“There may be another way.”

Elara turned.

“What?”

“The six flames can form a bridge into the creature’s mind. But Elara cannot heal it alone.”

Kael looked toward her.

“What does she need?”

“Voices willing to call it back from hatred.”

Elara remembered the freed souls rising above Valtherion.

Their light remained among the stars.

They had finally been given the freedom Aurion denied them.

She looked toward Asteria.

“Can they choose to help?”

The guardian nodded.

“Yes.”

Elara took a breath.

“Then ask them.”

Asteria raised the white star.

Across the sky, thousands of celestial lights began descending.

Not because they had been commanded.

Because they chose to return.

The spirits of Nareth.

The victims of ancient wars.

Every soul freed from the Golden Hand.

Their lights gathered around Elara.

Kael held her hand.

“I’m coming with you.”

She shook her head.

“You can’t.”

He smiled sadly.

“Then I’ll stay here and give you somewhere to return to.”

Elara kissed him.

Not the hurried farewell of frightened children.

But a kiss filled with everything they had survived.

When they separated, Kael rested his forehead against hers.

“Come home.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

Elara stepped into the circle of light.

The six flames ignited.

A bridge formed between the palace and the Devourer’s chest.

She crossed it.

At the center of the creature’s body, darkness swallowed her.

Then she found herself standing inside an endless black ocean.

A wounded celestial being floated beneath the surface.

Its wings were broken.

Its eyes were filled with unbearable grief.

Elara approached.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

The being opened its eyes.

EVERYONE WHO CAME BEFORE YOU DID.

She knelt beside it.

“I know.”

THEY STOLE MY LIGHT.

A white star appeared in Elara’s hands.

She held it forward.

“I brought it back.”

The creature stared.

WHY?

Elara’s voice trembled.

“Because what happened to you was wrong.”

The ocean grew still.

The being whispered:

I HAVE KILLED SO MANY.

Elara lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

CAN I BE FORGIVEN?

She thought of Seraphine.

Of Aurion.

Of Theron.

Of herself.

Then answered:

“I can’t forgive you on behalf of the people you hurt.”

The being lowered its head.

“But you can choose what happens next.”

The white star brightened.

Elara extended her hand.

“Will you help us heal the world?”

For a long time, the creature did not move.

Then its enormous wing folded gently around her.

I WANT TO TRY.

May you like

The star entered its chest.

And for the first time in three centuries, the Devourer began to cry.
