Chapter 25 - THE WOMAN BEYOND THE WESTERN VEIL

Asteria arrived at dawn.

The western sky split open, revealing a sea of stars beyond the world.

From the opening descended a woman wearing silver armor and a crown of white fire.

Her dark hair moved as though suspended in water.

Eight celestial flames glowed upon her wrist.

Elara stared in awe.

Asteria landed upon the ruined palace steps.

Aurion immediately raised his sword.

“You should still be imprisoned.”

Asteria looked at him with quiet sadness.

“And you should have learned from what you did.”

The First King’s expression hardened.

“I saved this world.”

“You chained it to your fear.”

Aurion stepped forward.

“If I had not acted, the Devourer would have destroyed everything.”

Asteria shook her head.

“The Devourer was never our enemy.”

Elara froze.

“What?”

Asteria turned toward her.

“The being you call the Devourer was once the Guardian of the Boundary.”

Theron stared.

“Then how did it become that creature?”

Asteria looked toward Aurion.

“He tried to enslave it.”

The celestial woman raised one hand.

A vision appeared above the palace.

Eight guardians stood around a great circle of stars.

At their center floated a luminous creature with wings of silver and eyes filled with galaxies.

It was beautiful.

Terrifying.

But not evil.

Asteria spoke.

“The Boundary Guardian maintained the balance between life and death, creation and destruction.”

The vision changed.

Aurion entered the circle carrying a black sword.

He demanded that the guardians give him the power to make his kingdom eternal.

They refused.

So he attacked.

His blade struck the Boundary Guardian.

Celestial light fractured.

The creature screamed as its essence split into two parts.

One became darkness.

The other vanished beyond the world.

“The Devourer was born from the suffering of a wounded guardian,” Asteria said.

Elara felt sick.

Every kingdom in Aurelith had feared the creature for centuries.

But its rage had begun with betrayal.

Aurion’s expression twisted.

“I did what was necessary.”

Asteria looked toward him.

“That is what every tyrant says.”

The First King raised his sword.

Golden fire erupted around him.

“You would destroy everything I built!”

Asteria did not move.

“No, Aurion.”

She lowered her voice.

“I would allow the world to become something better.”

Aurion attacked.

His sword descended toward her.

Elara reacted.

She stepped between them and raised her marked hand.

Six flames erupted.

The impact threw the spectral king backward.

Aurion stared at her.

“You defend the woman who threatens your inheritance?”

Elara looked directly at him.

“My inheritance is not your power.”

She glanced toward the city.

“It’s the chance to repair what you broke.”

Asteria studied her.

Then smiled faintly.

“Perhaps the world is finally ready.”

Elara turned.

“Can you stop the Devourer?”

Asteria’s expression became grave.

“I can help heal what Aurion wounded.”

“How?”

“By restoring the part of the Boundary Guardian that was stolen.”

Elara looked toward the First King.

Aurion stepped backward.

His golden crown began flickering.

Asteria continued.

“The missing light is hidden inside Aurion’s crown.”

The chamber fell silent.

Theron stared at the king.

“That’s why his spirit survived.”

Asteria nodded.

“He used the guardian’s stolen light to preserve himself beyond death.”

Elara felt anger rise.

The First King had condemned thousands to sacrifice while using stolen celestial power to escape his own mortality.

She turned toward him.

“Give it back.”

Aurion laughed.

“If I surrender the light, my spirit will fade.”

Elara stepped closer.

“Then for once, choose something more important than yourself.”

Aurion stared at her.

For a moment, he looked like an old man rather than a legend.

Then his expression hardened.

“No.”

May you like

He raised his sword.

And declared war upon his last descendant.
