Chapter 22 - THE QUEEN’S LAST ORDER

Kael collapsed beneath the Shadow Crown’s lingering curse.

Elara caught him before his head struck the floor.

His eyes flickered between brown and violet.

“Elara,” he gasped. “Get away.”

She held him tighter.

“No.”

Maelor raised one hand.

The black veins spread across Kael’s neck.

Seraphine rushed forward.

“Leave my son alone!”

Maelor laughed.

“You gave him to me.”

The Queen froze.

He continued.

“You signed the binding covenant. You begged me to make him immortal.”

Seraphine’s voice broke.

“I didn’t understand.”

“That does not undo the bargain.”

Elara looked toward the Queen.

For a moment, anger overwhelmed her.

Seraphine had created this nightmare.

And now everyone was paying for it.

But Seraphine stepped toward the altar.

“Then take me instead.”

Maelor hesitated.

The Queen raised her head.

“You wanted royal blood. Mine will do.”

Kael looked toward her.

“Mother, no.”

Seraphine knelt beside him.

She touched his face.

For the first time in years, her gesture held no command.

No expectation.

Only grief.

“I told myself everything I did was for you.”

Kael’s eyes filled with tears.

“But it wasn’t.”

Seraphine nodded.

“No.”

She looked toward Elara.

“I was afraid of losing the people I loved. And I turned that fear into cruelty.”

Elara said nothing.

The Queen continued.

“I cannot undo the murders. I cannot return your childhood. But I can refuse to help him hurt another child.”

She rose.

Then stepped into the circle of dark runes.

Maelor smiled.

“A noble sacrifice.”

Seraphine looked at him.

“Not noble.”

She removed the ruby crown from beneath her cloak.

“I carried this for eighteen years because I believed it made me powerful.”

Then she hurled it against the altar.

The gemstones shattered.

A wave of royal magic erupted from the crown.

Maelor recoiled.

“What have you done?”

Seraphine seized the broken crown and pressed its jagged edge against the black runes.

Golden fire surged upward.

The binding around Kael snapped.

The Prince gasped.

Elara pulled him away from the altar.

Theron raised a shield around Lyanna.

Seraphine stood amid the flames.

The ritual was consuming the magic sustaining her life.

Kael struggled to rise.

“Mother!”

She turned toward him.

Tears streamed down her face.

“My boy.”

He reached for her.

“Come back!”

Seraphine smiled sadly.

“I spent your whole life trying to keep you from making your own choices.”

Kael shook his head.

“Please.”

She looked at Elara.

“Don’t let him remember me only as a monster.”

Elara felt tears rise.

She could not forgive Seraphine’s crimes.

But she could see the frightened woman who had finally refused to commit another.

“I’ll tell him the truth,” Elara said.

Seraphine nodded.

“That’s all I deserve.”

Then she turned toward Maelor.

“MY REIGN ENDS HERE!”

She struck the altar.

The explosion shook the chamber.

Kael screamed as golden fire swallowed his mother.

The ritual collapsed.

Lyanna’s chains shattered.

Maelor was thrown into the darkness.

For a moment, everything became white.

When Elara opened her eyes, Seraphine was gone.

Only the broken royal crown remained.

Kael knelt beside it, unable to speak.

Elara approached.

He looked at her through tears.

“I hated what she became.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“But she was still my mother.”

Elara knelt beside him.

“I know that too.”

Kael began sobbing.

She held him as the chamber trembled around them.

And high above, the palace bells rang without human hands.

The stolen Queen was dead.

But the price of her redemption had not closed the prison.

The Golden Hand had begun opening on its own.
