Chapter 24 - THE NIGHT THE DEAD RETURNED AS STARS

The Golden Hand shattered.

Not into pieces of metal.

Into light.

Thousands of golden sparks erupted from its fingers, filling the chamber with the voices of the dead.

Elara stumbled backward.

Around her appeared translucent figures.

Men.

Women.

Children.

People from Nareth.

Victims of the ancient wars.

Souls who had been trapped within Aurion’s prison for three centuries.

Their expressions were not angry.

They were exhausted.

Elara felt their grief as though it belonged to her.

A little boy approached.

He wore the torn clothes of an ancient fishing village.

“Are we free?”

Elara knelt.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the dark ceiling.

“Can I see the sky?”

Elara’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

The boy smiled.

Then his body dissolved into silver light.

One by one, the trapped souls rose through the palace.

They passed through stone walls.

Through broken towers.

Into the night sky.

Above Valtherion, thousands of new stars appeared.

The people gathered in the streets, staring upward.

For the first time in centuries, the dead of Nareth were free.

But the prison beneath the kingdom began collapsing.

A terrible roar shook the mountains.

The Devourer emerged.

Its enormous shadow stretched across the horizon.

Black wings unfolded above the capital.

Its eyes were like burning holes in the world.

Theron staggered toward the altar.

“The chains are gone!”

Kael drew his sword.

“Then we fight.”

Lyanna shook her head.

“You cannot kill it with steel.”

The Devourer’s voice echoed through every mind in Aurelith.

AT LAST.

Mountains trembled.

Rivers surged.

The sky turned black.

The creature looked toward Elara.

CHILD OF THE THIEF.

She raised her glowing wrist.

“I am Elara Veyne.”

The Devourer laughed.

YOUR BLOOD OPENED MY PRISON.

“Because innocent people deserved freedom.”

AND NOW YOUR WORLD WILL PAY.

A wave of darkness swept toward the palace.

Elara raised both hands.

The six celestial flames formed a shield.

The impact nearly crushed her.

Kael caught her before she fell.

Across the chamber, Lyanna opened the ancient journal.

“There’s something missing.”

Theron looked toward her.

“What?”

“The Eighth Guardian.”

Elara remembered the woman Aethros had shown her.

Asteria.

The forgotten guardian imprisoned beyond the western ocean.

Lyanna continued.

“The original covenant wasn’t created by Aurion. It belonged to eight celestial guardians who maintained balance through cooperation.”

Theron stared.

“Then the Eighth Guardian may know how to rebuild it.”

Elara looked toward the black horizon.

“How do we reach her?”

Suddenly, the spectral First King appeared above the broken altar.

Aurion.

His golden armor was cracked.

His crown burned with weak, flickering light.

He stared at the escaping souls.

“What have you done?”

Elara turned.

“Freed the people you sacrificed.”

Aurion’s expression hardened.

“You have doomed the kingdom.”

She stepped toward him.

“No. You doomed them when you decided their lives belonged to you.”

The spectral king raised his sword.

“You understand nothing of the burden of ruling.”

Elara stared at him.

“Then tell me why you imprisoned Asteria.”

Aurion froze.

For the first time, the legendary king looked afraid.

Elara continued.

“She was your ally.”

Aurion slowly lowered his sword.

His voice changed.

“She would not obey.”

The confession silenced the chamber.

Elara felt the truth settle over her.

The First King had not imprisoned Asteria because she was dangerous.

He imprisoned her because she refused to surrender her freedom.

Then a new voice echoed across the sky.

A woman’s voice.

Brother.

Aurion turned.

Above the western horizon, a crown of white fire appeared.

The Eighth Guardian had heard the breaking of the prison.

And she was coming home.
