Chapter 24 - The Unwritten ChapterTwo weeks later, Claire stood on the scaffolding of a half-restored 19th-century brick warehouse down by the river. Her hands were dusted with lime mortar, her clothes practical and comfortable—denim jeans, a flannel shirt, and a tool belt slung over her hips.

A young apprentice named Leo climbed up beside her, handing her a blueprint. “The structural engineers approved the beam reinforcement, Claire. We can start sealing the north wall tomorrow.”

“Good work, Leo,” she smiled, checking the measurements.

As the apprentice climbed back down, Claire walked to the edge of the open-air window frame, looking out over the water where her father’s business had once fought its bitterest battles. Across the river, the old Blackwood estate sat dark and empty, its future tied up in municipal conservation trusts.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting an email from the foundation or an update from Mara.

Instead, it was a text from an unknown number.

The building looks better in your hands than it ever did in theirs.

Claire stared at the screen for a long moment. She didn't panic. She didn't wonder who sent it. She simply replied: Who is this?

The response came instantly: Just a reader.

Claire smiled, locked her phone, and slipped it back into her tool belt. She looked back down at the brick wall waiting to be restored, picked up her trowel, and got back to work.
