Chapter 19 - The Silent PartnerThree days later, back in the city, Claire met Charles Mercer in a quiet, sunlit café near the river. Charles looked older, his hair completely white, the immaculate control he once wore like armor replaced by the humble grace of a man who had nothing left to hide.

“Julian was right about one thing,” Charles said, stirring his black coffee. “David wasn't the top of the food chain.”

Claire folded her hands on the wooden table. “Who was?”

“When Vivian built Blackwood Holdings fifty years ago, she didn't have capital. She had ambition and a silent backer—someone who operated entirely outside the corporate registry, a man known only in the oldest ledgers as ‘The Trustee.’”

“A person?”

“An institution,” Charles corrected. “An offshore consortium that controlled the land grants beneath half the commercial riverfront, including the land where Morgan Urban Development and Blackwood House both stand.”

Claire pulled out a faded document recovered from Julian’s storage unit—a partnership deed signed in 1974. At the bottom was a signature she didn't recognize, alongside a stamp from an international shipping conglomerate named Aethelgard Corp.

“Aethelgard hasn’t existed under that name in forty years,” Claire noted.

“It never died,” Charles said softly. “It just changed its name. It’s currently operating as a global asset management firm under the portfolio of a man who recently bought up every distressed share of Blackwood debt left on the market.”

“Name?”

“Victor Vance.”

Claire froze. The name wasn't unfamiliar. Victor Vance was a reclusive billionaire philanthropist who had quietly funded the restoration of St. Augustine Church four years earlier—the exact same church where Claire had trapped Ethan and Vivian.
