Chapter 21 - The Architect of FatesVictor Vance set one glass down on the low table between them, inviting her to sit. Claire remained standing.

“You look at me as if I’m another predator,” Vance said, taking a slow sip. “Ethan was a brute. Vivian was a parasite. David was a petty thief. But I? I am simply the weather, Claire. Empires rise and fall according to my climate.”
“You funded the feud,” Claire said, her voice cutting through the hum of the wind outside. “You set up the original partnership between Thomas Morgan and Vivian Blackwood fifty years ago.”
“I funded ambition,” Vance corrected smoothly. “I provided the capital for men and women who thought they could outsmart the tides. Your father wanted to build a city; Vivian wanted to own it. I gave them both the rope, knowing full well what they would eventually do with it.”
“And when my father tried to walk away? When he tried to expose the fraud?”
Vance’s expression darkened slightly. “That is where he made his mistake. Thomas lacked vision at the end. He thought a business was about people, about families, about ethics. A business of that scale is a machine, Claire. When a gear starts grinding against the grain, it has to be replaced.”
“You ordered his death,” Claire whispered, the room suddenly feeling impossibly small.
“I ordered his silence,” Vance replied, unblinking. “The poison was supposed to keep him in a hospital bed for a month while we restructured the trust. Evelyn and Jonathan botched the dosage because they were greedy and panicked. I never wanted him dead. But when he drowned... well, the machine adjusted.”
Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands did not shake. She reached into her coat pocket, her fingers brushing the small digital recorder she had left running the moment she crossed the threshold.
“You just confessed to conspiracy and corporate manslaughter to an empty room,” Claire said steadily.

Vance chuckled—a dry, raspy sound like autumn leaves scraping across pavement. “Do you truly believe a recording will survive this house, Claire? Do you think the local police, the federal prosecutors, or the judges who sit on my foundation boards would ever let a file from this estate see a courtroom?”
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I didn't bring you here to threaten you, child. I brought you here to offer you the throne.”
