Chapter 16 - The Witness Who Never LeftSix months after the trial concluded, Claire received an unmarked envelope containing a single key and an address in upstate New York.

She had not planned on investigating anything else. The foundation ran smoothly, Mara was rebuilding her life in a different city, and the quiet rhythm of architectural restoration had finally replaced the chaos of courtrooms and betrayal. Yet, when she looked at the key—stamped with the number 404—she recognized the distinct brass weight. It belonged to the old Morgan timber lodge near Lake Placid, a property her father had closed off a decade before his death.

Claire drove north alone, refusing to involve Reyes or the foundation. The lodge sat deep within a dense pine forest, untouched by the modern world. When she unlocked the front door, the air smelled of cedar and dust.

She found the hidden compartment behind the stone fireplace exactly where her father’s blueprints indicated it should be. Inside sat an old reel-to-reel tape recorder and a stack of ledgers predating the Blackwood feud by twenty years.

She threaded the tape and pressed play.

A younger Thomas Morgan spoke, his voice steady but laced with a quiet, terrifying realization: “If anyone is listening to this, it means David didn't just want Morgan Urban Development. He built the very foundation of Blackwood Holdings using embezzled capital back when we were partners. Vivian didn't trap us—David engineered the entire partnership from the shadows thirty years ago, and he used my own ambition to blind me.”

Claire’s hands froze over the machine.

David Morgan hadn’t just been a resentful brother trying to salvage his share; he was the architect of the original theft that made Vivian Blackwood wealthy enough to buy her first empire. Every betrayal, every corporate war, and every drop of blood spilled had been choreographed by a man sitting safely in a prison cell, watching them all tear each other apart.

And the key in her hand wasn’t just to a lodge. It was to the storage unit where David had kept his real archives—archives he assumed the federal raid had missed.
