Chapter 6 - Elena’s Warning

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Richard unfolded the handwritten page.
Damian recognized Elena’s handwriting instantly.
Small.
Neat.
Careful.
His daughter had written:
If anything happens to me before Lily is grown, I do not want Celia to have unsupervised control of my daughter or her property.
Damian’s face went pale.
Richard kept reading.
Elena described missing money from one of the family companies.
Unexplained transfers.
Forged reimbursement documents.
And repeated pressure from Celia.
She had suspected Celia was stealing.
Celia stood abruptly.
“She hated me.”
Damian looked at her.
“Elena protected you for years.”
“She judged me.”
“She was afraid of you.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
Richard continued.
Elena had not accused Celia of causing her death.
She had written no dramatic prediction.
No wild conspiracy.
Only facts.
Celia had repeatedly asked Elena to borrow against her company shares.
Elena refused.
Celia then demanded access to Lily’s future trust.
Elena refused again.
Three weeks later, Elena changed her estate plan.
Eleven days after that, she and her husband died when their SUV slid off a rain-slick highway.
Damian closed his eyes.
He had never questioned the crash.
Police called it an accident.
Richard seemed to read his thoughts.
“Damian, don’t jump beyond the evidence.”
Celia laughed bitterly.
“Finally. Someone in this room has a brain.”
Richard ignored her.
“Elena’s statement proves motive for financial control. It does not prove anything about the accident.”
Damian nodded.
He understood.
He didn’t need fantasies.
What Celia had already done was bad enough.
Lily sat quietly beside Frank.
Then she tugged his sleeve.
“Can Grandpa see my secret box?”
Frank frowned.
“What secret box?”
Celia spun toward Lily.
“No.”
Every adult in the room looked at her.
Celia recovered too late.
Lily shrank into the chair.
Damian crossed the room.
“What box, sweetheart?”
Lily stared at her shoes.
“The one Aunt Celia said was bad.”
“Where is it?”
“In Mommy’s room.”
Celia moved toward the door.
A police officer blocked her.
“Ma’am, stay where you are.”
Damian crouched.
“What’s inside the box?”
Lily swallowed.
“Mommy’s phone.”
Damian’s heart seemed to stop.
Elena’s phone had never been recovered after the crash.
At least, that was what Damian had been told.
Celia’s ice pack slipped from her hand.
Richard slowly turned toward her.
“Where did Lily get Elena’s phone?”
Celia’s voice came out too quickly.
“She didn’t.”
Lily looked up.
“Yes, I did.”
“How?”
Lily’s next words wiped every trace of arrogance from Celia’s face.
“Mommy gave it to me before she went away.”
