Chapter 17 - Celia’s Last Bargain

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Celia offered information.

In exchange, she wanted reduced charges.

That part was normal.

Her condition was not.

She wanted Damian to publicly state that her treatment of Lily had been “misunderstood discipline.”

Richard nearly laughed when he read it.

Damian didn’t.

“She still needs the lie.”

“Why?” Frank asked.

Richard answered.

“Civil liability. Trust disqualification. Reputation.”

Elena’s amendment contained another clause.

If any family member attempted to obtain Lily’s assets through fraud, coercion or abuse, that person permanently forfeited any claim against Elena’s estate and any management role in the family companies.

Celia had apparently only learned part of the amendment.

She knew Lily had inherited the assets.

She did not know that abusing Lily would cost Celia everything she might otherwise receive from Damian’s estate plan.

Damian read the clause twice.

Then looked at Richard.

“She gets nothing from Elena.”

“Correct.”

“And my estate?”

“That remains your decision.”

Damian picked up a pen.

“Not anymore.”

Richard stopped him.

“Don’t change estate documents while angry.”

Damian looked at him.

“I’m not angry.”

Richard raised an eyebrow.

Damian sighed.

“Fine. I’m angry.”

“Wait.”

“How long?”

“Until you can make the decision for Lily’s future, not Celia’s punishment.”

That irritated Damian.

Which meant Richard was right.

Celia’s second offer was more important.

She would provide passwords to accounts containing the missing foundation money.

She would also identify forged financial documents.

In exchange, prosecutors would consider those admissions when negotiating charges.

No promise.

No immunity.

Damian did not control that process.

Nor did he want to.

“What about Lily?” he asked.

“She doesn’t have to see Celia.”

“Ever?”

“Not unless a court later determines contact is safe. Given the evidence, that appears unlikely.”

Damian nodded.

Then Richard handed him another paper.

A letter from Celia.

Damian almost refused it.

Instead, he read.

Dad,

You created this.

You taught us winning mattered.

You taught us weakness gets punished.

Elena learned how to please you. I learned how to survive you.

Damian read the lines again.

They hurt because there was enough truth buried inside the manipulation to matter.

He had been hard.

He had demanded discipline.

He had brought boxing rules into family life too often.

But he had never taught Celia to chain a child.

He had never taught her to steal.

He had never taught her to risk her sister’s life.

Damian folded the letter.

Then he went upstairs.

Lily was awake.

“Grandpa?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you mad?”

“At you? Never.”

“No. At Aunt Celia.”

Damian sat beside her.

“Yes.”

Lily thought about that.

“Does being mad make you bad?”

Damian looked at his scarred hands.

“No.”

“What you do with it matters.”

Lily nodded slowly.

That answer wasn’t only for her.

It was for him.

The next morning Damian made one decision.

He would not write Celia out of his estate out of revenge.

He would do something bigger.

He would move the family assets into a protected structure benefiting Lily and the youth programs Elena loved.

Celia would never control them.

No one would.

But before the new trust could be signed, investigators discovered that more than $400,000 of the stolen foundation money had already disappeared overseas.

And the transfer had happened after Celia’s arrest.
