Chapter 5 - What Elena Left Behind

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Richard arrived twenty-six minutes later.

By then, police had taken preliminary statements.

The bodyguards had been transported for treatment under supervision.

Celia remained in the mansion because Damian had told officers there might be evidence of child abuse and fraud inside the house.

She sat on the sofa with an ice pack against her cheek.

Still defiant.

Still dressed like she owned the place.

Richard entered carrying a locked leather case.

He looked at Lily first.

Then at the bruises on her wrist.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Damian answered.

“My daughter happened.”

Celia rolled her eyes.

“Spare me.”

Richard set the case on the desk.

“Damian, Elena changed her estate plan eleven days before she died.”

Damian stared at him.

“You never told me.”

“She instructed me not to disclose the amendment unless one of three triggering events occurred.”

“What events?”

“Someone challenged Lily’s custody. Someone attempted to gain control of Lily’s finances. Or Lily reached twenty-five.”

Damian slowly looked at Celia.

She had triggered two.

Richard unlocked the case.

Inside was a sealed document.

“Elena knew someone might come after Lily’s inheritance.”

Celia’s face became rigid.

Damian noticed.

“You’ve seen this.”

“No.”

“You knew it existed.”

Celia said nothing.

Richard opened the amendment.

“Elena transferred her full ownership interest in Moretti Athletic Holdings into Lily’s trust.”

Damian blinked.

Moretti Athletic Holdings owned twelve boxing gyms.

Two commercial buildings.

Licensing rights to Damian’s name.

And a significant stake in the mansion itself.

Damian’s voice dropped.

“How much?”

Richard hesitated.

“At current valuation? Roughly thirty-eight million dollars.”

The room went silent.

Damian sat down.

Celia looked away.

That number explained the guardianship petition.

But Richard wasn’t finished.

“Elena also named you as sole trustee while you’re living and competent.”

Damian looked up.

“So Celia couldn’t touch the money even if she became guardian.”

“Normally, no.”

“Normally?”

Richard turned to another page.

“If you were ruled medically unable to serve, control would pass to Lily’s court-appointed guardian until an independent trustee was confirmed.”

Damian understood.

His surgery.

The claims he was physically deteriorating.

The staged evidence that Lily was unstable.

Celia wasn’t just trying to take Lily.

She was trying to remove Damian.

Celia finally stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

Richard looked at her.

“Is it?”

“You think I abused a child for money?”

Damian’s jaw flexed.

“I watched you stage evidence against her.”

Celia’s voice sharpened.

“I was protecting this family from a senile old boxer and a disturbed child.”

Damian began to rise.

Richard touched his arm.

“No.”

That single word stopped him.

Richard turned another page.

“There’s more.”

Celia’s face changed again.

Fear.

Real fear.

Richard noticed it too.

“Elena included a handwritten declaration.”

Damian stared.

“What does it say?”

Richard looked directly at Celia.

“It says Elena was afraid of her sister.”
