Chapter 9 - The Shadows of Victory

The roar of two hundred mob bosses echoing through the Grand Ballroom was still ringing in Maeve’s ears as Elias led her down the grand marble staircase of the hotel. Outside, a fleet of armored black Suburbans waited in the crisp autumn air, surrounded by a perimeter of Marchetti enforcers whose submachine guns were tucked neatly beneath their tailored wool coats.

The city of Chicago had a new queen, and everyone in the underworld knew it. Lorenzo Moretti was dead on the stage, the Ashford family was ruined and fleeing the state, and the vast, lucrative territories of the Outfit had officially been absorbed into Elias Marchetti’s empire.

Yet, as the heavy door of the luxury SUV closed, sealing them into a quiet cocoon of soft leather and tinted glass, Maeve let out a long, shuddering breath. The intense adrenaline that had sustained her through the dramatic confrontation on the stage began to drain, leaving behind a cold, hollow fatigue.

Elias sat beside her, his long legs uncrossed, looking every bit the absolute ruler who had just swallowed a rival empire whole. He turned his head, his dark, hypnotic eyes taking in the sight of her pale face and the slight tremble in her fingers.

Without a word, he reached across the seat, wrapping his broad, warm hand over hers, his thumb tracing the sharp edge of the ten-carat emerald-cut diamond resting on her finger.

"You were extraordinary, Maeve," Elias said softly, his deep baritone carrying a rare, unyielding pride. "Most women born into this life would have fainted under the weight of those eyes. You stood on that stage and broke the Ashfords with a single sentence."

Maeve looked down at their joined hands, her heart giving a soft, erratic thud. "I didn't do it for power, Elias. I did it because for seven years, Margaret and Sienna treated me like I wasn't human. They made me feel invisible. Standing there next to you... it was the first time in my life I felt like my voice actually mattered."

Elias’s grip on her hand tightened slightly. His dark eyes softened, a faint, devastatingly handsome smile touching the corner of his lips. "Your voice matters more than anyone else's in this city, my queen. Never forget that."

Before Maeve could respond, his satellite phone buzzed against his chest. Elias answered it with a quick flick of his thumb, his posture instantly shifting back to sharp, strategic readiness.

"Speak," Elias commanded.

"Boss," Gabriel’s voice came through the encrypted speaker, clear and sharp. "We've secured Lorenzo’s private residence and his main holding facility on the south side. His captains surrendered without firing a shot. But our tech team found something troubling inside Lorenzo's private safe."

Elias’s eyes narrowed, the warmth in his face evaporating instantly. "What did you find?"

"Files, Elias," Gabriel replied grimly. "Not financial files—intelligence files. Lorenzo wasn't acting alone when he organized that crash on Lower Wacker Drive. He was receiving funding and inside security codes from a syndicate overseas. The Camorra clan out of Naples."

Silence settled over the armored vehicle. Maeve felt the air grow heavy as Elias listened to his security chief's report.

"Did the Camorra know about Maeve?" Elias asked, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on the back of Maeve’s neck stand up.

"They have a full dossier on her, Boss," Gabriel said, hesitation laced in his tone. "They knew she was the housemaid. In fact, according to the intercepted wire transfers, the Camorra specifically instructed Lorenzo to use her presence to publicly discredit you before launching an all-out war for our shipping docks."

Elias’s jaw set into iron. "Ensure every port under our control is placed on highest threat level. Deploy extra security around St. Jude’s Hospital and the estate. We go on lockdown immediately."

"Understood, Boss."

Elias cut the connection and slid the phone back into his pocket. He turned back to Maeve, his face an unreadable mask of cold, calculated intensity.

"What is it?" Maeve asked quietly, her pulse picking up speed. "What's the Camorra?"

"An old enemy from the motherland," Elias explained calmly, though his dark eyes burned with a dangerous spark. "They believe that because Chicago underwent a sudden shift in power today, we are vulnerable. They think they can reach across the Atlantic and claim what belongs to me."

"Will they come after Leo?" Maeve’s voice cracked, panic instantly creeping back into her blue eyes.

Elias leaned in close, taking both of her hands in his, bringing them up to his chest so she could feel the steady, unshakeable beat of his heart.

"No one touches your brother," Elias vowed, his tone carrying an absolute, terrifying certainty. "Leo is being moved to our private medical bunker inside the manor's estate within the hour. He will have the best care in the world, surrounded by twenty of my most loyal men. I give you my word, Maeve. Your brother is safe."

Maeve searched his eyes, seeing no hesitation, no doubt—only a fierce, protective aura that completely enveloped her. For a girl who had spent her entire life fending for herself and fighting to keep her sick brother alive, having a man like Elias stand as an invincible shield in front of her family felt almost surreal.

"Thank you, Elias," she whispered, leaning forward slightly until her forehead rested against his shoulder.

Elias wrapped his arms around her, holding her fragile frame against his chest as the motorcade swept through the iron gates of the Marchetti manor.

By nightfall, the Marchetti estate felt less like a residential palace and more like an impenetrable fortress. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs, searchlights swept the manicured lawns, and tactical teams monitored dozens of live security feeds from the subterranean command room.

Inside the grand master suite, Maeve stepped out of the private bathroom, wrapped in a soft, silk white robe. The heavy diamond necklace and pearl earrings sat neatly on the vanity table, sparkling under the warm lamp light.

The door to the bedroom opened softly, and Elias walked in. He had removed his suit jacket and tie, unbuttoning the top three buttons of his crisp white dress shirt, rolling the sleeves up to his elbows to reveal the intricate, dark tattoos covering his muscular forearms.

Maeve turned around, her wet dark hair cascading over her shoulders, her heart doing a familiar, electric flutter in her chest as his dark eyes locked onto her.

"How is Leo?" Maeve asked gently, stepping toward him.

"He woke up an hour ago," Elias said, a genuine, soft look touching his sharp features. "Dr. Aris said his vitals are perfect. He’s already asking for his sister."

A bright, beautiful smile broke across Maeve’s face—a smile so radiant that Elias caught his breath, staring at her as if she were the only living thing in the universe.

"Can I see him?" she pleaded softly.

"Tomorrow morning," Elias promised, walking slowly toward her until only a few inches separated them. "He is resting comfortably in the east wing bunker. Right now, you need to eat, drink, and rest. You have survived three days of absolute chaos, my queen."

Maeve looked up at him, taking in the sharp line of his jaw, the faint shadow of stubble, and the gold flecks dancing in his dark brown eyes. The fear that had gripped her when she first walked into his library three days ago was completely gone, replaced by a deep, intoxicating pull that she could no longer deny.

"Elias," Maeve murmured, reaching out with a trembling hand to rest her palm against his chest, right over his beating heart. "Why did you really do all of this? Not just paying for Leo's surgery... but standing up to the Council, killing Lorenzo, making me your wife in front of the entire city?"

Elias looked down at her small hand against his shirt. He raised his own hand, placing his broad palm over hers, his fingers intertwining with hers.

"When I sat in that wheelchair pretending to be broken," Elias said softly, his baritone dropping into a low, intimate murmur, "I expected everyone to betray me. I expected Sienna to show her true colors. I expected my enemies to strike. I had calculated every variable, mapped out every betrayal."

He stepped closer, wrapping his free arm around her slender waist, pulling her flush against his broad, muscular body.

"What I didn't calculate," Elias whispered, his dark eyes burning into hers with a raw, terrifying honesty, "was a girl in cheap pearls jumping in front of a bullet meant for me. In a world full of lies, you were the only truth I had ever seen. I didn't make you my queen to win a war, Maeve. I made you my queen because I cannot live in a world where you do not belong to me."

Maeve’s breath hitched in her throat. The intensity of his words struck her straight in the heart, sending a wave of fiery heat rushing through her veins. She realized then, with absolute clarity, that she wasn't just a prisoner in a golden cage, and she wasn't just a fake bride playing a role.

She was falling deeply, helplessly in love with the most dangerous crime lord in Chicago.

"Elias..." Maeve whispered, her fingers trailing up his chest to wrap around the back of his neck, pulling his head down. "I'm not going anywhere."

Elias didn't hesitate. He leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that consumed everything in its path.

Maeve gasped against his mouth, her arms tightening around his neck as he lifted her easily into his arms, carrying her toward the massive, velvet-draped king bed in the center of the room. The cold rain lashed against the high arched windows outside, but inside the master suite, wrapped in the warmth of Elias’s arms, Maeve felt entirely safe, completely cherished, and utterly invincible.

Hours later, as midnight passed over the silent estate, Maeve lay sleeping peacefully against Elias’s chest, her hand resting over his heart, the ten-carat diamond glittering softly in the dim light of the dying fire.

Elias lay awake, gently stroking her dark waves, watching her serene face with an fierce, protective devotion.

Suddenly, his satellite phone on the nightstand vibrated with a single, high-priority text message from an unknown encrypted European number.

Elias reached over carefully, keeping Maeve securely tucked against his side, and unlocked the screen.

The text contained a single line of Italian, followed by a live satellite image of the Marchetti manor highlighted by a red target reticle:

"The King of Chicago has built a palace of glass. We are coming to shatter it, and we will take your queen as our prize."

May you like

Elias stared at the screen, his face hardening into an expression of pure, unadulterated, lethal vengeance. He turned the phone off, set it down, and leaned down to press a soft, fierce kiss onto Maeve’s forehead.

"Let them come," Elias whispered into the dark room, his hand tightening protectively around his wife. "They will find only death in my kingdom."
