Chapter 8 - The Judgment of the King

The absolute, suffocating silence inside the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was heavy enough to crush bones.

Over two hundred of the most lethal figures in the Midwest sat paralyzed in their seats, staring at the broad-shouldered man standing at the base of the stage. Elias Marchetti stood tall, powerful, and utterly unyielding, his sharp suit tailored to perfection, his dark eyes burning with the cold, predatory threat of a ruler who had tricked the entire city into exposing its true neck.

On the stage, Lorenzo Moretti backed away until his spine hit the wooden podium. His pinstriped suit felt suddenly tight, his breathing shallow and rapid. "You... your legs... the medical reports from St. Jude’s..."

" medical reports were written by men who value their lives, Lorenzo," Elias said smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step up the stairs toward the stage. His boots echoed against the polished hardwood with a rhythmic, terrifying precision. "I allowed you to believe I was broken because I needed to see which wolves in my pack would try to take my throat the moment I appeared weak."

Elias reached the top of the stage, his gaze sweeping across the room. Every mob captain, every corrupt council member lowered their eyes, unwilling to make direct eye contact with the dark lord of Chicago.

"And I needed to see," Elias added softly, turning his head toward Margaret and Sienna Ashford, "how far desperation would drive a family of parasites."

Margaret Ashford choked on her breath, taking two frantic steps back. Her face had drained of all color, her hands shaking violently as she clutched her daughter's arm. Sienna was trembling so hard her knees buckled, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror as she stared at the man she had abandoned three days prior.

"Elias..." Margaret stammered, her voice high-pitched and pathetic. "Elias, listen to me! Lorenzo forced us! He threatened to kill us if we didn't come here and lie about—"

"Silence," Elias commanded softly.

The single word cut through the air like a guillotine. Margaret’s jaw snapped shut, her throat working uselessly as tears of sheer panic began to spill down her painted cheeks.

Elias turned, extending his hand down the short flight of stairs toward Maeve, who stood gracefully at the foot of the stage.

Maeve looked up into his dark eyes. Her heart was pounding, her blood humming with adrenaline, but as she reached up and placed her hand in his broad palm, a profound sense of calm washed over her. She allowed him to draw her up onto the stage, stepping directly beside him under the brilliant glare of the crystal chandeliers.

The massive ten-carat emerald-cut diamond on her left hand caught the light, casting sharp, brilliant reflections across the grand stage. Beside it, the real three-million-dollar South Sea pearls rested against her chest like an untouchable sigil of absolute royal standing.

"Gentlemen of the Ruling Council," Elias declared, his deep baritone carrying to every corner of the room. "You were invited here today to witness a confession. Lorenzo Moretti claimed I was deceived by a common maid. He put a five-million-dollar price on this woman's head."

Elias slid his arm around Maeve’s waist, pulling her firmly against his side.

"Look at her," Elias commanded the room. "This is Maeve Marchetti. Three nights ago, when Lorenzo’s hitmen breached my library with automatic rifles, every noble-born coward in my circle fled. But Maeve stood her ground. She used her own body as a shield to protect me from gunfire. She didn't care about my money, my title, or my empire. She cared about my life."

Murmurs of shock and deep respect began to ripple through the audience. The old-school mob captains—men who valued raw loyalty above all else—nodded slowly, looking at Maeve with a sudden, profound reverence.

"In our world," Elias continued, his voice hardening into cold steel, "a crown is not given by blood or birthright. It is earned through loyalty paid in advance. Maeve proved her right to sit beside me on the night she bled for this empire. Any man who questions her standing... questions mine."

He turned his attention directly to Lorenzo, whose forehead was now slick with cold sweat.

"And as for the bounty," Elias said, a faint, lethal smile playing on his lips. "Gabriel."

At the rear of the ballroom, Gabriel Ferraro stepped forward, carrying a metallic briefcase. He walked up onto the stage, set the case on the podium, and snapped the brass latches open.

Inside rested five million dollars in stacked, uncirculated hundred-dollar bills.

"Here is the five million dollars Lorenzo promised," Elias announced, looking out over the two hundred armed men in the room. "I will personally double it to ten million dollars... for the head of any man who raised a weapon against my wife, or any man who supported Lorenzo Moretti’s treason today."

A sudden, violent wave of panic surged through Lorenzo’s inner circle. The armed guards standing near Lorenzo instinctively took two steps away from him, their hands lifting away from their waistbands. In the underworld, loyalty was expensive, but ten million dollars from Elias Marchetti was an absolute death sentence.

"No! Wait!" Lorenzo screamed, backing toward the rear exit of the stage, his hands raised in frantic surrender. "Council! You cannot let him do this! This is against the charter!"

"The charter was written by my family, Lorenzo," Elias whispered, stepping forward with terrifying speed.

Before Lorenzo could draw his sidearm, Elias grabbed him by the throat, lifting the heavy mob boss straight off his feet with one arm, slamming him violently back against the wooden projection screen. The image of Maeve's old housemaid photograph shattered as Lorenzo’s head cracked against the wall.

Lorenzo gasped for air, his feet dangling six inches above the floor, his eyes bulging as Elias’s grip tightened around his windpipe like a vice of solid iron.

"You threatened my wife," Elias purred softly into Lorenzo’s ear, his tone terrifyingly quiet. "You put a price on her life. You threatened her little brother."

"P-please..." Lorenzo choked out, his face turning a deep, unnatural purple. "Elias... mercy..."

"Mercy is a contract I never sign," Elias replied.

With a sudden, sickening twist of his wrist, a loud CRACK echoed through the silent ballroom.

Lorenzo Moretti’s body went completely limp. Elias let go, allowing the corpse of Chicago’s second-largest crime lord to crumple uselessly onto the stage floor at Maeve’s feet.

The room went dead silent. No one moved. No one dared to draw a breath. Two hundred mobsters sat frozen in terror, witnessing the absolute, swift annihilation of a challenger who had dared to test the king.

Elias calmly pulled a white silk handkerchief from his breast pocket, wiping his fingers clean, before tossing the cloth over Lorenzo’s lifeless face.

He turned toward Margaret and Sienna Ashford.

Margaret collapsed onto her knees, sobbing uncontrollably, her hands clasped together in desperate prayer. "Elias! Please! Forgive us! We'll leave Chicago! We'll surrender everything! Just don't kill us! Please!"

Sienna was hyperventilating, hiding behind her mother, her makeup ruined by streaks of black mascara and tears.

Maeve looked down at the two women who had treated her like garbage for seven agonizing years. She remembered the endless nights of scrubbing their floors, the cruel insults, the threat to let her little brother die in a hospital bed if she didn't comply with their fraudulent scheme.

She stepped forward, her silk dress rustling softly, her head held high.

"Get up, Margaret," Maeve said, her voice clear, steady, and commanding.

Margaret looked up, her face pale and swollen with tears, staring at her former maid as if she were an judge holding the scales of life and death.

"You gave me a choice three days ago," Maeve said quietly, her blue eyes shining with absolute authority. "You told me my brother would die if I didn't play your fake bride. Now, I give you a choice."

Maeve looked at Elias, who stood beside her, watching her with a proud, intense gaze, completely surrendering the floor to his queen.

"You will sign over every deed, every offshore asset, and the entire Ashford estate to the Marchetti Foundation," Maeve declared, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. "You and Sienna will leave Illinois by sunset. If either of you ever steps foot in Chicago again, or speaks my name to anyone... my husband will ensure you disappear without a trace."

Margaret didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed the pen from the podium with trembling fingers, rapidly signing her name across the legal transfer documents Gabriel placed before her.

"Done! It's done!" Margaret wept, dragging Sienna up by her wrist. "We're leaving! We're leaving forever!"

They scrambled off the stage, running through the center aisle of the ballroom like defeated animals, disappearing through the heavy oak doors into the cold Chicago rain.

Elias turned toward the two hundred mob captains sitting in the ballroom. His dark eyes swept over them, his voice booming out with supreme, absolute command.

"The Moretti territory belongs to the Marchetti empire now," Elias announced. "Any captain who wishes to swear fealty to my wife and me will stand and bow. Any captain who wishes to fight... may draw his weapon now."

For two seconds, no one moved.

Then, the oldest council member—a veteran captain who had served under Elias’s father—stood up from his seat. He placed his right hand over his heart and bowed deeply toward the stage.

"Long live King Elias," the old boss shouted. "And long live Queen Maeve!"

Within three seconds, every single man in the Grand Ballroom stood up in unison. Two hundred hardened, lethal killers bowed their heads toward the stage, their voices echoing through the massive hall in a terrifying, triumphant chorus that shook the very foundations of the building.

Maeve stood beside Elias, feeling his large, warm hand wrap around hers, their fingers interlacing. She looked out at the sea of powerful men bowing before them, then turned to look up into the handsome, dark face of the man who had turned her terrifying cage into an unbreakable throne.

May you like

Elias leaned down, his lips brushing against her ear, his breath warm and intoxicating.

"You see, my queen?" Elias whispered, his dark eyes burning with fierce, eternal devotion. "The city is yours."
