Chapter 5 - The Price on Her Head

The heavy air in the study instantly turned frigid, heavy with an explosive tension that made the flames in the stone fireplace flicker and die down.

Gabriel stepped fully into the room, holding up a rugged tactical tablet displaying a encrypted dark-web channel. Bold, blood-red text flashed across the screen alongside a high-resolution photograph of Maeve’s face—not the glamorous, polished facade of Clara Ashford, but a raw, candid photo taken of her months ago in her faded maid’s uniform outside the Ashford estate.

TARGET: MAEVE DONNELLY. REWARD: $5,000,000 DEAD OR ALIVE.

Maeve felt the room spin violently around her. The floor seemed to drop out from beneath her feet. Five million dollars. It was an unfathomable sum of money—a figure large enough to turn every criminal, every mercenary, and every corrupt hitman in the state of Illinois into a hungry wolf hunting her down.

"Lorenzo," Elias spat, the name leaving his mouth like a drop of deadly poison. He didn't look at the tablet; his dark, unyielding eyes remained locked entirely on Maeve, watching the color drain completely from her face until she looked as translucent as glass.

"How did Lorenzo get that picture?" Gabriel demanded, his voice tight with controlled fury. "Only a handful of people knew her real identity. The Ashford women... or someone inside our own organization leaked it."

"Margaret," Maeve choked out, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She clutched her chest, her fingers tangling in the damp fabric of her dress. "It was Margaret Ashford. When she left here tonight... she realized she was losing control over the merger. She must have sold my name to Lorenzo Moretti out of spite, hoping he would kill me before the wedding!"

"Margaret Ashford is a foolish, desperate parasite," Elias said, his baritone dropping an octave into a register that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. "She believes she played a winning hand. She has no idea she just signed her family's death warrant."

He took a slow, deliberate step toward Maeve, extending his arm. Without waiting for her permission, he pulled her shivering body firmly against his chest. His arms wrapped around her like iron bands, offering a terrifying yet undeniably solid barrier against the violent storm raging outside.

Maeve didn't pull away. The sheer sheer weight of the threat hanging over her head pressed down so hard that resting her forehead against his broad chest felt like her only lifeline. She could hear the slow, rhythmic, terrifyingly calm beat of his heart.

"Elias..." she whispered into his damp white shirt, her hands clutching his waist. "He's going to hunt me. Five million dollars... every hitman in Chicago will come for me. I can't stay here. I'm putting you in danger. If Lorenzo realizes you're protecting a maid..."

"Let them come," Elias interrupted quietly, his long fingers gently stroking her damp dark hair. "Let every murderer in this city march to my front gate. They will find out what happens when you attempt to harvest blood from the Marchetti throne."

He tilted her face up gently, his thumb tracing the sharp curve of her trembling chin. His eyes burned with an terrifying, possessive fire that left no room for doubt.

"You are not a helpless target, Maeve," Elias whispered, his voice vibrating straight through her chest. "You are my declared bride. An attack on you is an attack on my crown. Lorenzo Moretti thinks he is backing me into a corner because he believes I am confined to a wheelchair. He is about to learn that he didn't trap a cripple... he awakened a monster."

Gabriel cleared his throat, breaking the intense silence between them. "Boss, what about the hospital? The operation for her brother is scheduled in four hours at St. Jude’s. If Lorenzo has her photo, he might have men watching the pediatric wing. He could use the boy to draw her out."

Maeve gasped, her eyes flying wide in pure, unadulterated horror. She grabbed Elias’s lapels with frantic strength, her knuckles turning bone-white. "Leo! Oh God, no! Please, Elias! Don't let them hurt Leo! Take my life, do whatever you want to me, but save my brother!"

"Calm yourself," Elias ordered softly, his grip on her tightening to anchor her panic. He turned his head toward his security chief, his face returning to a mask of absolute, icy authority. "Gabriel. Deploy Squad Alpha to St. Jude’s immediately. Put the entire pediatric floor on total lockdown. Disguise two of our best female operators as head nurses inside the boy's room. If a single stranger steps onto that floor without my personal clearance, put a bullet in their spine and toss them in the river."

"Understood," Gabriel replied, his eyes gleaming with fierce efficiency. "And the surgeon?"

"Dr. Aris will perform the surgery under heavy armed escort," Elias commanded. "Move the boy to our private medical bunker at the estate the moment he stabilizes after the operation. He will recover under our roof, where Lorenzo’s dogs cannot reach him."

Gabriel gave a sharp nod and immediately turned on his heel, pulling out his encrypted phone as he rushed out of the study, leaving the doors slightly ajar.

Maeve stood frozen in Elias’s embrace, tears slipping silently down her cheeks. Relief and fear fought a chaotic war inside her chest. He was moving mountains for her—a woman who had walked into his life under false pretenses, carrying a basket of lies.

"You're saving him," Maeve wept, looking up into his dark, mesmerizing face. "You're spending millions of dollars and risking a mob war for a sick boy you've never even met."

"I am saving him because his sister chose to shield me with her life," Elias said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate murmur. He reached up, gently brushing away her tears with his thumb. "In my world, debt is paid in full. You gave me your courage, Maeve. I give you your family's survival."

He leaned down slightly, his lips hovering mere inches from hers. The heat radiating between them was intoxicating, thick with a dark, magnetic pull that made Maeve’s breath hitch in her throat. For a fraction of a second, she found herself leaning into him, drawn to the absolute safety and dark power he represented.

Before their lips could touch, the sudden, shrill ring of Elias’s primary satellite phone broke the spell.

Elias didn't rush. He slowly disengaged from her, reaching down to pick up the red-encrypted phone resting on the mahogany desk. He pressed the speaker button, his expression turning cold as ice.

"Speak," Elias commanded.

"Elias... my dear nephew," a rough, raspy voice echoed through the speaker, accompanied by the faint background sound of classical opera music and clinking glass.

It was Lorenzo Moretti.

Maeve covered her mouth, her eyes fixed on the phone as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.

"I hear you had a bit of excitement at the estate tonight," Lorenzo said, his voice dripping with mock sympathy and sinister mockery. "Pity about your legs, Elias. A man of your standing, reduced to sitting in a rolling chair while foreign assassins tear up your library. It must be humiliating."

Elias turned his black onyx ring slowly around his pinky, a deadly, amused smile touching his lips. "You always were terrible at sending professionals, Lorenzo. The two men you sent tonight died before they could even stain my rug properly."

Lorenzo let out a harsh, gravelly laugh over the line. "Those two were just a greeting card, boy. But let's talk about the real reason I called. I hear you've taken a shine to a little Ashford girl. Or should I say... a little housemaid named Maeve Donnelly?"

Maeve’s heart hammered against her ribs. She took a step closer to Elias, clutching the edge of the desk.

"The Ashford matriarch sold her out real cheap," Lorenzo continued, his tone turning dark and predatory. "Five hundred grand for her medical files and her family background. It seems your precious prospective bride is nothing more than a penniless servant who lied her way into your mansion. A proxy fake."

Elias’s dark eyes flicked toward Maeve, holding her gaze with unwavering calm. "And what is your point, Lorenzo?"

"My point is that the Outfit does not respect a crippled king who gets fooled by a housemaid," Lorenzo hissed, his voice dropping into a lethal threat. "I put five million dollars on her head tonight. Every mercenary in the Midwest is hunting her down. Hand the girl over to me by morning, Elias. Let me execute her publicly for disrespecting the Families, and maybe... just maybe... I will let you keep your waterfront territory and live out the rest of your pathetic life in that wheelchair."

Silence stretched across the study, heavy, suffocating, and charged with absolute peril.

Elias leaned over the desk, bringing his face close to the microphone. When he spoke, his voice was not angry. It was calm, quiet, and laced with an icy, terrifying certainty that made the hairs on the back of Maeve’s neck stand up.

"Listen to me carefully, Lorenzo," Elias said, his baritone slicing through the speaker like a razor blade. "You have sixty minutes to call off that bounty."

"Or what?" Lorenzo sneered. "You'll roll your wheelchair to my estate and shoot me yourself?"

"Or I will personally dismantle everything you have built over the last forty years," Elias replied smoothly. "I will seize your docks, slaughter your captains, burn your clubs to the ground, and erase the Moretti name from the history of Chicago. And when I am done... I will walk into your bedroom on my own two feet, drag you into the street, and feed you to the dogs."

On the other end of the line, Lorenzo’s sarcastic laughter instantly withered into a tense, stunned silence. The absolute, unshakeable conviction in Elias’s voice was enough to instill terror in the heart of any man who knew his reputation.

"You're bluffing, cripple," Lorenzo spat, though a faint quiver betrayed his sudden uncertainty.

"Test me," Elias whispered, and slammed the phone back onto the receiver, cutting the connection.

He turned back to Maeve. She stood trembling, staring at him with a mixture of absolute awe and sheer terror. He had just declared total, unholy war on the largest crime syndicate in Chicago, all to protect her—a former housemaid with nothing to her name.

"Elias..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What have you done?"

"I have set the board," Elias said, walking toward her with lethal, fluid grace. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a delicate, heavy velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring—a flawless, massive ten-carat emerald-cut diamond mounted on a band of pure platinum, glittering wildly under the firelight.

It was ten times larger, ten times more magnificent than the ring Sienna Ashford had thrown away.

"This was meant for our engagement gala tomorrow," Elias said, taking her trembling left hand in his broad palm. "But considering the circumstances... we will accelerate our timeline."

Without waiting for an answer, Elias slid the heavy, blazing diamond onto her ring finger. The metal was cool against her skin, but the weight of it felt like an eternal vow.

"From this moment, you are no longer Maeve Donnelly the maid," Elias declared, his eyes burning into hers with absolute, terrifying passion. "And you are no longer Clara Ashford the fake. You are Maeve Marchetti. My wife. My queen. The protected matriarch of this empire."

Maeve stared down at the blinding diamond resting on her finger, then looked up into the dark, breathtaking eyes of the man who ruled the city.

"The bounty..." she stammered, her heart racing uncontrollably. "Lorenzo’s men... they will come for us."

May you like

Elias smiled—a dark, beautiful, deadly smile that made her blood run hot.

"Let them come, my queen," Elias murmured, leaning down until his lips finally brushed softly against hers, sealing their fate in a fiery, thrilling kiss. "Tonight, we hunt the wolves."
