Chapter 6 - The Blood Alliance

The taste of Elias’s lips was a dangerous mix of smoky scotch, dark promise, and absolute ownership. For a fraction of a second, Maeve forgot the five-million-dollar bounty on her head, forgot the rain pouring outside, and forgot that the broad-shouldered man kissing her was supposed to be a paralyzed mob boss. All she felt was the electrifying heat running through her veins, tethering her to the only person in Chicago who could shield her from complete annihilation.

When Elias slowly pulled back, his dark eyes held a fierce, triumphant burn. His thumb lightly traced her lower lip, which was still tingling from the weight of his kiss.

"Now," Elias murmured, his baritone sending a thrill straight down her spine. "You are truly mine."

Maeve looked down at her left hand. The ten-carat emerald-cut diamond caught the amber glow of the stone fireplace, blazing with a blinding brilliance. It was a staggering symbol of absolute wealth and terrifying power, sitting heavily where a maid's callus used to be.

"Elias..." Maeve breathed, her breath hitching as she looked up at him. "This isn't just a marriage to stop Margaret Ashford anymore. Lorenzo Moretti put a price on my head. Every hitman in this city will be looking for a girl named Maeve Donnelly."

"Then we make sure they find Maeve Marchetti instead," Elias replied, his dark features hardening into an unyielding mask of authority. "And when they do, they will learn that trying to collect a bounty on my wife is a quick way to earn a unmarked grave under the concrete of the south side docks."

Before she could speak, the heavy mahogany doors of the private study burst open.

Gabriel Ferraro hurried in, his face tight with grim urgency. He held a high-frequency satellite phone in one hand and a secure radio in the other.

"Boss," Gabriel said rapidly. "Dr. Aris just called from St. Jude’s. Squad Alpha has secured the entire pediatric floor. Your brother, Leo, is currently in the operating room. The surgical team began the procedure twenty minutes ago."

Maeve gasped, pressing her hands to her chest. Tears of raw, overwhelming emotion welled in her eyes. "Leo... he's in surgery? Right now?"

"The best pediatric cardiac team in the nation is operating on him, Miss Donnelly," Gabriel assured her, giving her a respectful, almost reverent nod that he had never offered before. "The hospital perimeter is completely locked down by twenty of our best men. No one gets near that room."

"Thank God," Maeve whispered, a ragged sob escaping her throat as she closed her eyes, offering a silent, desperate prayer for her little brother's heart to stay strong.

"What about Lorenzo's bounty?" Elias asked coldly, turning toward Gabriel. "Has there been movement on the streets?"

"It’s chaos out there, Elias," Gabriel reported, his voice dropping into a tense tone. "The five-million-dollar contract hit every dark-web syndicate within twenty minutes. Three bounty crews have already entered our territory on the West Side. But that’s not our only problem."

Gabriel tapped his tablet, bringing up a live audio intercept feed.

"Lorenzo called an emergency meeting of the Outfit's Ruling Council at the Grand Plaza Hotel for two o'clock tomorrow afternoon," Gabriel explained. "He’s bringing Margaret and Sienna Ashford as his key witnesses to prove to the other mob bosses that you were deceived by a housemaid, that your engagement is a fraud, and that you are physically unfit to hold the Marchetti throne."

Elias chuckled—a low, melodic, thoroughly terrifying sound that vibrated through the room. "Margaret and Sienna truly believe that crawling to Lorenzo will save them. They are so desperate to ruin us that they've handed me their necks on a silver platter."

"If the Council sides with Lorenzo tomorrow, they will declare open war on our family," Gabriel warned grimly. "The other captains are already uneasy about your condition after the crash on Lower Wacker Drive. They think you are sitting helpless in a wheelchair, getting manipulated by a nobody."

"Let them think it," Elias said, a lethal, mesmerizing smile spreading across his sharp jawline. "We won't interrupt Lorenzo’s grand presentation. In fact, we will give him the spotlight he so desperately craves."

Maeve looked between the two men, her heart racing. "What are you planning, Elias?"

Elias stepped toward her, taking her small hand in his, his large, warm fingers weaving firmly through hers.

"Tomorrow afternoon, the entire criminal underworld of Chicago will assemble at the Grand Plaza," Elias said softly, his dark eyes burning into hers. "Lorenzo will stand before the Council and present Margaret Ashford. He will parade Sienna around like a victim. He will display your maid photograph on a twenty-foot projection screen and demand my execution for weakness."

He brought her hand to his lips, pressing a warm, deliberate kiss against the massive diamond on her finger.

"And right at the moment when Lorenzo thinks he has won," Elias whispered, "you and I will walk into that ballroom."

Maeve’s eyes widened in shock. "Walk in? You... you mean you're going to reveal that you can walk?"

"I am going to reveal everything," Elias declared, his voice carrying the terrifying force of a king preparing for absolute conquest. "I will show the Council that my legs were never broken. I will show them that Margaret Ashford is a scheming fraud who blackmailed her own staff. And I will present you—not as a substitute, not as a helpless maid, but as the ruthless, brave woman who took a bullet for the ruler of Chicago."

Maeve felt a wave of absolute vertigo. The thought of stepping into a room filled with armed mob bosses, vicious syndicate leaders, and the vengeful Ashford women terrified her to her core. She was a girl who had spent seven years keeping her eyes glued to the floorboards, sweeping up dust and avoiding eye contact with rich people.

Now, she was being asked to stand beside a dark god and help him claim an empire.

"Can I really do this, Elias?" Maeve whispered, her voice laced with self-doubt. "I don't know how to act like society royalty. I don't know how to stand in front of dangerous men."

Elias reached out, gently cupping her face in his hands, forcing her to look straight into his mesmerizing, gold-flecked eyes.

"You don't need to act like society royalty, Maeve," Elias said fiercely. "Society royalty is weak. Sienna Ashford screamed and ran when guns were drawn. You stood your ground. You shielded my life with your own body. That makes you stronger than every politician, heiress, and mobster in that room."

He leaned down until his forehead rested lightly against hers, his warm breath fanning across her lips.

"You don't need to learn how to play their games, my queen," Elias murmured softly. "You just need to hold my hand and let me burn their world to the ground."

A strange, fierce courage ignited deep within Maeve's chest. For seven long years, Margaret and Sienna Ashford had treated her like garbage, stepping on her, threatening her sick brother, and using her as a disposable tool. For seven years, she had been invisible.

No more.

If Elias Marchetti was willing to wage an all-out war with the Chicago Outfit to protect her, the least she could do was stand by his side with her chin held high.

"Okay," Maeve said, her blue eyes shining with a sudden, unshakeable resolve. "I'll do it. I'll walk into that room with you."

Elias smiled—a breathtaking, genuine smile of dark pride that made her heart skip a beat. "That is my girl."

He turned back to Gabriel, his tone switching effortlessly back to supreme command. "Gabriel. Bring our head stylist and security team to the estate immediately. I want Maeve outfitted in a gown fit for an empress. Arm her with a concealed weapon under her dress. Prepare the armored motorcade for two o'clock tomorrow."

"Consider it done, Boss," Gabriel replied, a cold, satisfied grin breaking across his face. "And what about Margaret and Sienna?"

"Leave them to Lorenzo for now," Elias ordered, his dark eyes flashing with lethal anticipation. "Let them celebrate their fake victory for a few more hours. Tomorrow, when the trap springs, their fall will be legendary."

Gabriel gave a swift bow and exited the study, leaving the doors closed behind him.

Silence fell over the massive room once again, broken only by the quiet patter of rain against the balcony glass.

Maeve looked down at her damp silk dress, then at her bare feet, suddenly feeling the exhaustion of the crazy night crashing down on her. Her mind spun with thoughts of her brother Leo in the operating room, the five-million-dollar price on her head, and the explosive confrontation waiting for them at the Grand Plaza Hotel in less than twelve hours.

Elias walked slowly toward her. He reached out, gently slipping his arm around her waist, and pulled her softly against his broad chest.

"You are exhausted," Elias said softly, his voice full of an unexpected, tender warmth. "Come. You need to rest before tomorrow."

Maeve didn't protest as he led her out of the study and down the grand hallway toward his private master suite—a massive, luxurious room dominated by a king-sized bed draped in black velvet sheets and soft firelight.

He led her to the bed, helping her untie her ruined shoes and sit back against the plush pillows. He pulled a heavy, warm comforter over her shivering shoulders, his touch remarkably gentle for a man whose hands commanded thousands of lethal soldiers.

"Will you stay?" Maeve whispered, holding the edge of the blanket, looking up at him with vulnerable, beautiful eyes.

Elias looked down at her, his dark eyes softening in a way no living person in Chicago had ever seen before. He sat down on the edge of the bed, taking her hand in his, his thumb tracing the outline of her engagement ring.

"I am not going anywhere, Maeve," Elias promised softly, his baritone wrapping around her like a protective shield. "I will be right here. Watching over you while you sleep. No one in this city will ever hurt you again."

May you like

Maeve closed her eyes, letting out a deep, trembling sigh of relief. As exhaustion finally claimed her body, she squeezed his hand tightly, feeling the absolute, unbreakable strength of the crime lord who had turned the entire city upside down just to keep her safe.

And as storm clouds thundered over Chicago, preparing for the bloodbath of the coming day, Maeve Donnelly finally fell asleep in the warm, dangerous arms of her king.
