Chapter 28 - The Master File

Ryan slowly looked up from our children, his eyes hardening into flint. "What happened?"

"Brianna broke under interrogation twenty minutes ago," Harris reported, holding a thick legal folder under his arm. "When she realized Croft had been shot and Carter had the duplicate trust deed, she turned state's evidence. She confessed that Evelyn planned the entire physical altercation on your porch."

"She admitted it?" I asked, looking down at our sleeping daughter, whose chest rose and fell in perfect peace.

"She did," Harris confirmed. "She admitted that Evelyn promised her fifty percent of the four-million-dollar principal if she could force an early miscarriage that resulted in maternal incapacitation. The video footage from your hallway camera—which Carter retrieved from your remote cloud drive—was played in court ten minutes ago."

"The judge?" Ryan asked.

"Denied bail for both Brianna and Evelyn," Harris said with grim satisfaction. "They are being transferred to the state correctional facility pending trial for attempted aggravated murder, conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain, first-degree arson, and wire fraud. Marcus Croft is facing disbarment and federal racketeering charges. They are never getting out, Ryan."

A heavy, profound silence settled over the room.

The nightmare that had begun with an envelope and a closed-fist blow to my pregnant belly was finally over. The law had held. The truth had survived the fire.

Carter stepped forward, stopping at the foot of the bed. He looked down at the twins, his scarred face softening with an emotion he had kept locked away for over two decades.

"Dad would have been proud of you, Ryan," Carter said quietly. "You didn't run like I did. You stood your ground. You protected your family."

"You came back, Carter," Ryan answered, extending his right hand. "When it mattered most, you came back."

Carter looked at Ryan's hand for a moment, then reached out and gripped it firmly, sealing a brotherhood that had been broken by lies and rebuilt in fire.

"I brought something else," Carter said, pulling a worn, leather-bound journal from his jacket pocket. "This was in Julian's vault, beneath the lockbox. It's his personal ledger from the year the original trust was drafted."

Ryan took the book, his brow furrowing. "Why didn't you give this to Harris?"

"Because it’s not evidence for a crime," Carter said, his voice dropping into a solemn, troubled whisper. "It’s a letter Julian left for whoever survived the conspiracy. It’s addressed to you, Ryan. And Clara."
