Chapter 27 - The Sound of the Heartbeat

The world narrowed to the sight of two gloved fingers pressing rhythmically against a chest no larger than an apple.

"Come on, little girl," the neonatologist murmured, bagging tiny puffs of air into a miniature silicone mask. "Come on. Breathe for your mother."

Ryan was gripping my hand so hard my fingers were numb, his entire body shaking with silent, wracking sobs. I couldn't move my legs; I couldn't sit up; I was trapped behind the blue surgical drape, staring at the sterile ceiling lights, listening to the agonizing beep of a monitor counting down the seconds of our daughter's life.

*One. Two. Three. Compress.*

"Inject zero-point-one milligrams of epinephrine into the umbilical line," the doctor commanded quietly.

"Please," I whispered into my mask, the words dissolving into hot condensation. "Please God. Take the money. Burn the land. Take everything I have. Just let her breathe."

Thirty seconds passed. Thirty seconds that stretched into an eternity of cold, unyielding silence.

Then, a tiny, ragged cough echoed from the warmer.

A fragile, shuddering gasp.

And then, a furious, indignant, full-throated scream that filled the entire operating theater.

"There she is!" the nurse cried out with a breathless laugh. "Heart rate returning to normal! One-thirty... one-forty! Good pink color! Spontaneous respiration established!"

I collapsed back against the operating pillow, weeping until my chest ached, feeling Ryan’s tears soaking into my neck as he buried his face against mine.

"Time of birth: 5:45 AM," Dr. Althaus announced, looking over the drape with exhaustion and profound relief in her eyes. "A girl. Five pounds, eight ounces. You have a son and a daughter, Clara. And they are both fighters."

Twenty minutes later, the surgical team moved me to a recovery suite.

The twins, wrapped in matching white flannel blankets with pink and blue striped beanies, were placed gently against my bare chest. Their skin was warm, soft as velvet, their tiny fists clutching at the air before resting against my heart.

Ryan sat on the edge of the mattress, his arms wrapped around all three of us, our foreheads resting together in the quiet dawn light filtering through the window blinds.

The door opened with a soft click.

Detective Harris stood in the frame, flanked by Carter, whose arm was now bound in a clean medical sling.

"I apologize for interrupting," Harris said gently, stepping in and pulling the door shut behind him. "Mr. and Mrs. Vance... the magistrate just concluded the emergency arraignment for Brianna Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Marcus Croft."
