Chapter 25 - The Confession in the Rain

A spray of red hit the concrete pillar.

I squeezed my eyes shut, a raw, primal scream tearing from my throat in the hospital bed, convinced that my husband had just been executed on a fuzzy security monitor.

"Ryan!"

"Down! Everybody down!" Detective Harris’s voice cracked through the radio speaker.

I forced my eyes open.

Ryan was still on his knees, breathing heavily, his hands raised. He wasn't bleeding.

Ten feet away, Marcus Croft was writhing on the ground, clutching his right shoulder where a single 9mm round had shattered his collarbone. Behind him, standing at the entrance of the garage ramp with smoke curling from the barrel of his service pistol, was Detective Harris.

Two tactical cruisers screeched into the bay, sirens wailing, their high-beam searchlights blinding the entire floor. Officers swarmed the area with rifles raised.

Brianna scrambled backward on her hands and knees, her face white as chalk, her designer coat covered in grease. "I didn't do anything! It was Croft! He told me Clara's babies would void the trust! He told me to punch her!"

"Shut up, Brianna!" Croft spat through bloody teeth, groaning in agony as paramedics moved in to secure his shoulder.

Ryan ignored them both. He knelt down beside his older brother, pulling a pocketknife from his belt and slicing through the thick zip-ties around Carter’s wrists.

Carter rubbed his chafed skin, coughing weakly as he leaned his back against a concrete barrier. "You took your sweet time, little brother."

"Why did you sign that document forty-eight hours ago, Carter?" Ryan demanded, his voice thick with unspent tears and confusion. "Why did you tell them at the airstrip that Julian's debt came due?"

Carter closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the concrete. Rain from his earlier escape dripped down his hollow temples.

"Because Julian didn't steal the land, Ryan. Evelyn did," Carter murmured, his voice cracking with twenty years of buried pain. "When Mom died, Evelyn manipulated Julian’s stroke-induced dementia. She forced him to sign over the conservatorship. When I found out, they framed me for the warehouse fraud in Lansing. That’s why I ran. That’s why I let you think I abandoned you."

Ryan stared at him, stunned. "And the trust fund?"

"The $150,000 was a bait clause," Carter whispered, looking Ryan dead in the eye. "Julian knew Evelyn would try to kill whoever inherited the land. So he set up a trigger. If any Vance heir attempted to unlawfully dissolve the trust or harm another beneficiary, the entire estate—the land, the bank accounts, the $4.2 million—defaults instantly to the unborn descendants."

Ryan stood up, the wind knocked out of him. "The twins."

"The moment Brianna threw that punch on your front porch," Carter said, a faint, battered smile breaking across his bloodied lips, "she didn't secure her inheritance. She legally disinherited herself and Evelyn forever. All we needed was Croft’s master file to prove the conspiracy."

Just then, my hospital room door flew open.

Dr. Althaus stood there, her surgical mask already tied, her gown prepped, her face dead serious.

"Mrs. Vance, we have an emergency," she said, her hands moving rapidly to unlock the bed brakes. "Twin B’s heart rate just plummeted to sixty. We are going to the operating room right now."
