Chapter 13 - Secrets on the Hard Drive

The specialist worked out of an unassuming brick storefront in an industrial park twenty miles outside the city. His name was Leo, a former cyber-crimes technician for the federal judiciary whose hair was perpetually disheveled and whose desk was covered in disassembled circuit boards.
He connected Brianna’s laptop to a diagnostic rig using a write-blocker to preserve the forensic chain of custody.
"Standard BitLocker encryption," Leo mumbled, chewing on the end of an unlit vape. "Give me twenty minutes. If she used a dictionary password or an alphanumeric derivative of her birthday, it'll pop right open."
Ryan and I sat in two mismatched swivel chairs, watching the green lines of code cascade down Leo’s dual monitors.
Seventeen minutes later, the machine gave a sharp electronic chirp.
"Bingo," Leo muttered. "Password was *Cartier2021!*. Real genius your sister is, Ryan."
"Show us the financial directories," Ryan said, leaning over the tech's shoulder.
Leo navigated through user profiles, temporary internet files, and deleted document caches. "Let’s run a scrape for bank routing numbers, PDFs, and encrypted messaging databases."
The screen blinked, organizing thousands of files into chronological folders.
What appeared wasn't just evidence of a failing business. It was a ledger of absolute desperation.
Brianna hadn't just mismanaged her boutique. She had been running a private investment syndicate for several wealthy socialites in Evelyn’s circle, promising them guaranteed returns through high-end art and vintage jewelry arbitrage. It was a Ponzi scheme.
"Look at this date," I whispered, pointing at an email draft saved three days before she assaulted me.
The email was addressed to Marcus Vance.
*Marcus,*
*The investors from the Oakmont Club are threatening to go to the SEC. I have $8,000 left in the operating account. Mom said Ryan’s twins have $150k locked in the Vance family trust that Arthur funded. If Ryan won't release it willingly, what are my options? Can we forge Clara's signature on the trustee release? If she finds out, I will do whatever it takes to silence her. I am not going to prison for this.*
Beneath that draft was Marcus Vance’s reply.
*Do not put that in writing. Come to my office tomorrow. There is a clause in Arthur's codicil regarding family disputes. If an altercation occurs where fault can be contested, we can tie the trust funds up in probate and force a settlement. But you must ensure there are no witnesses.*
The room went dead silent.
Even Leo stopped chewing on his vape. He looked up at Ryan with wide, unsettled eyes. "Holy hell. That's conspiracy to commit fraud and premeditated assault."
"Marcus knew," Ryan whispered, the horror washing over his features. "Marcus planned it. Brianna didn't just lose her temper in our kitchen. She came to our house *intending* to stage an altercation to activate the punitive codicil!"
"She just didn't anticipate the camera," I said, a wave of cold clarity washing through my mind.
Brianna had thought it would be her word against mine. She had thought she could assault me, claim we had a mutual physical fight, and use the chaos to trigger the probate clause while Ryan was at work. But the hidden security camera had blown their entire scheme to pieces, capturing her unprovoked, brutal attack in crystal-clear high definition.
"Can you print these?" Ryan asked Leo, his voice vibrating with absolute fury. "Every single email, every timestamp, every metadata header?"
"I can do better," Leo said, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I can generate a certified cryptographic forensic image with a SHA-256 hash that will stand up in any criminal or civil court in this country."

"Print two copies," I said, standing up. My hands weren't shaking anymore. The fear that had gripped my throat since morning had burned away, replaced by an incandescent, lethal resolve. "One for the parole board. And one for the State Bar Association."
