Chapter 5 - The Contract of Salt and Ash

By two in the morning, the estate had transformed into a fortress under siege.

The rain lashed against the windows in violent sheets, accompanied by the low rumble of thunder that seemed to rattle the very foundations of the house. Inside the private study, the air was thick with the scent of old paper, leather, and melted sealing wax.

A white-haired man in a black clerical collar stood beside Kian’s massive mahogany desk, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with trembling hands. Father Thomas had been the Moretti family priest for four decades; he had buried Kian’s father, christened Zayn, and now stood ready to sanctify a union forged in the fires of an impending war.

Aurora sat in a high-backed leather chair, her fingers curled tightly around a cold ceramic cup of tea. She had washed her face; her fair skin was scrubbed clean, though the dark bruise on her wrist had deepened into a vivid, angry violet.

Kian stood across from her, having discarded his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, exposing the dense, dark tattoos that coiled around his muscular forearms like creeping vines. He placed a heavy, linen-bound legal document between them.

"This is not just a church sacrament, Aurora," Kian stated plainly, his voice cutting through the distant rumble of the storm. "Under New York state law and syndicate tradition, this is a blood contract. You will hold legal ownership of half my non-illicit assets. You will have full custody of Zayn should anything happen to me."

Aurora looked up, startled. "Custody? Mr. Moretti, you barely know me. How could you trust me with your son?"

Kian leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the desk, caging her within his intense gaze. "Because when my door was kicked down tonight, you didn't throw him toward the danger to save yourself. You picked up a frying pan and put your body between a child and three armed men. I don't give a damn about bloodlines, Miss Bennett. Loyalty is proven in the dark."

His eyes burned into hers with an intensity that made the breath catch in her throat. For a brief second, she saw past the ruthless boss to the desperate father who would burn the world to ashes just to keep his boy safe.

"Sign the document," Father Thomas urged gently, his voice creaking with age. "Before the dawn brings what cannot be undone."

Aurora took the heavy gold fountain pen from Kian’s outstretched hand. Her fingers brushed his; heat sparked against her skin, making her heart skip a beat. She pressed the nib to the parchment and signed her name: *Aurora Bennett.*

Kian took the pen immediately after, scrawling his signature with sharp, aggressive strokes.

"By the power vested in me," Father Thomas whispered, tracing a sign of the cross in the air above their joined documents, "what God has joined, let no man tear asunder."

Kian turned to Aurora. Without hesitation, he picked up the small silver ring Zayn had provided. He took her left hand in his large, warm grasp, his calloused thumb gently soothing the trembling in her fingers. He slid the band onto her fourth finger. It fit perfectly.

"You are a Moretti now," Kian murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers with terrifying permanence. "My enemies are your enemies. My home is your home. No one touches you."

Before Aurora could process the weight of the metal on her skin, a sudden, deafening *CRACK* split the night.

It wasn't thunder.

The high-pitched whine of an alarm system immediately shrieked through the house, bathing the study in pulsing crimson emergency lights. Outside, the sharp, rhythmic staccato of automatic gunfire erupted from the lower perimeter gates.

Father Thomas stumbled back, clutching his chest.

Kian didn't even flinch. His posture instantly shifted from negotiating patriarch to lethal apex predator. In one fluid motion, he reached beneath the lip of the desk, pulling free a heavy semi-automatic handgun, chambering a round with a crisp, chilling *clack*.

The heavy oak doors of the study burst open. One of the bodyguards from the diner, his face streaked with rain and blood, stood in the threshold, weapon raised.

"Boss! It's Vane’s strike team. They bypassed the southern sensors. They aren't trying to negotiate—they brought RPGs. They’re hitting the main gate right now!"

Kian didn't hesitate. He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Aurora by the upper arm—firm, but careful of her bruises—and pulled her toward a concealed bookshelf along the north wall.

"Zayn is already in the central panic vault with Martha," Kian growled, pressing a hidden switch beneath a row of leather-bound encyclopedias. The bookcase swung inward with a heavy hiss of hydraulics, revealing a narrow, reinforced steel staircase descending into the bedrock. "Get down there. Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone but me."

Aurora grabbed his wrist, her fingers sinking into the dense muscle of his tattooed forearm. Panic flared in her chest, but it wasn't just for herself anymore.

"What about you?" she demanded, her voice rising over the wailing alarms and echoing gunfire. "Kian, there are too many of them!"

Kian paused. He looked down at her small hand gripping his arm, then met her wide, frightened hazel eyes. A grim, savage smile touched the corner of his lips.

"They came into my home to steal my wife," he whispered coldly. "They aren't leaving alive."
