Chapter 1 - The Ring and the Iron Pan

The scent of stale frying oil and powdered bleach hung heavy in the cramped restaurant storage room. Outside the reinforced door, heavy boots pounded against the floorboards, accompanied by muffled, vulgar demands.

Aurora Bennett pressed her back against the rattling metal shelves. Her breath came in shallow, jagged gasps. Her long brown hair was uncoiling from its messy bun, damp strands clinging to her fair, flushed cheeks. Her chest heaved beneath her stained white button-up, and every muscle burned as she held a heavy, dented iron frying pan raised above her shoulder. The purplish bruises encircling her right wrist throbbed with every frantic beat of her heart, and her tongue caught the metallic tang of dried blood from the split on her lower lip.

"Open the damn door, Aurora!" Regina’s shrill, muffled voice pierced through the wood. "Tony doesn’t like waiting, and I don't intend to lose my house because you've suddenly found a conscience!"

Aurora squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back a sob of pure terror. She had nowhere left to run.

Then, a small tug brushed against the hem of her black trousers.

Aurora’s eyes flew open. Sitting amidst the cardboard boxes of industrial napkins was a boy who looked no older than six. He was breathtakingly pristine amidst the grime—fair-skinned with rosy cheeks, dressed in a miniature, bespoke black suit, crisp white shirt, and a silk bow tie. Under his arm, he clutched a worn brown teddy bear.

Before Aurora could drop the pan in shock, the boy dropped onto both knees before her. His posture was solemn, completely unfazed by the ferocious pounding shaking the hinges above them. With tiny, steady fingers, he withdrew a small black velvet box from his pocket and popped it open. Resting inside was a simple, glittering silver band.

Zayn looked up at her with large, earnest eyes filled with an impossible courage. His soft voice cut through the chaos outside with unshakable determination.

"Will you marry me, Miss Aurora? Then nobody can hurt you."

The innocence of the words shattered the terror constricting Aurora’s throat. A warm, stinging rush of tears flooded her eyes. He was just a child, playing hero in a den of monsters, yet the purity in his gaze offered the only warmth she had known in months. Slowly, her trembling hand lowered the frying pan to the concrete floor. She sank to her knees in front of him, her knees hitting the hard ground, and hooked her bruised pinky around his tiny, warm finger.

"Then yes," she whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, fierce affection. "I’ll marry you."

*BAM.*

The lock didn't yield; the entire door frame buckled inward with a thunderous crack. The door was shoved aside with deliberate, crushing force.

Aurora’s instincts flared. She shoved Zayn behind her small frame, scooping up the frying pan once more, her fair skin going stark white.

Framed in the doorway was a figure ripped straight from a nightmare.

Kian Moretti stepped over the splintered threshold. He was massive—well over six feet of coiled, predatory muscle wrapped in an impeccably tailored black suit and an open-collar black shirt that revealed the sprawling, intricate black ink crawling up his neck and chest. His swept-back dark hair and rough, light stubble cast harsh shadows across his brutally handsome features. Behind him, two enormous bodyguards blocked the corridor like impassable stone towers.

Aurora froze. Every instinct told her to scream. She knew that face; every soul in the city knew the face of the Moretti syndicate’s sovereign.

Kian’s ice-gray eyes swept the room. They lingered for a fraction of a second on the frying pan, flickered down to the violent violet bruises around her delicate wrist, and darkened into something lethal.

Before Aurora could speak, Zayn slipped out from behind her legs. He didn't run in fear; he ran straight toward the monster, a triumphant smile blooming across his cheeks. He pointed proudly back at Aurora.

"Dad! This is Aurora. She just agreed to marry me!"

Kian didn't scold him. His imposing frame sank into a slow crouch, bringing himself eye-level with his son, though his gaze never truly left Aurora.

Suddenly, high heels clicked frantically down the hallway. Regina Bennett pushed past the bodyguards, her expensive cream coat disheveled, her dyed blonde hair wild with frantic greed. "Listen to me, you brute, that girl owes—"

Regina cut herself off, choking on her own breath as Kian stood up. The temperature in the corridor plummeted. The mafia boss stepped squarely between Aurora and the doorway, blotting out the light, towering over the older woman whose rosy complexion instantly drained to a sickly, ash-white.

Zayn stepped forward, his little brow furrowing as he pointed a tiny finger directly at Regina. His voice shook with fearful, urgent certainty.

"Dad, that lady said she sold Aurora to a man named Tony."

Kian’s eyes narrowed into twin shards of obsidian. He turned slowly toward Regina, and a terrifying silence smothered the room.

"Tony," Kian repeated, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that made the metal shelves hum. "Tony Vane?"

Regina began to tremble so violently that the silver buttons on her coat rattled. And deep in Kian’s dark eyes, a predator awakened.
