Chapter 10 - The Vow Fulfilled

Aurora looked up, her eyes swimming with unshed tears.

The grand ballroom had dissolved into absolute chaos as federal agents flooded through the ornate doorways, flashing badges and shouting orders. Sycophants, corrupt politicians, and underworld lieutenants were being shoved against the marble walls in handcuffs. The empire Tony Vane had built on blood and blackmail was disintegrating in real-time.

Yet in the center of the hurricane, Kian Moretti stood motionless, waiting for her.

"The photograph," Aurora whispered, her voice trembling as she held up the crumpled paper. "He said you were the one who ran my father off the road."

Kian didn't take the photo. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest, until the familiar scent of cedarwood, rain, and clean soap enveloped her senses.

"I was twenty-three years old," Kian said softly, his deep voice thick with an ancient, haunting grief. "My father was a ruthless man, Aurora. But your father... Arthur was the only man who ever showed me what honor looked like. He tried to help me get out. When Tony figured out Arthur was leaking files, Tony cut the brake lines on his car."

Kian’s large, tattooed hand rose slowly, pausing before gently cupping her fair cheek. His thumb wiped away a single tear that had spilled over her lower lashes.

"I sped after him," Kian continued, his gray eyes shining with an agonizing honesty. "I watched his car hit the guardrail. I jumped into the river. I broke my own ribs trying to pry the driver's door open... but the current was too fast. Arthur’s last words to me, before the water took him, were: *'Find my Rory. Protect her from them.'*"

Aurora’s breath hitched on a broken sob. Her hand rose, her fingers wrapping around Kian’s wrist, pressing his palm tighter against her face.

"It took me five years to find you," Kian murmured, his forehead gently resting against hers. "Regina kept moving you, hiding you under false names, using you as collateral for her debts. When Zayn ran into that restaurant tonight... it wasn't a coincidence. I had tracked Regina there. But my son... my son found you first."

"Why didn't you tell me?" she choked out.

"Because I didn't want you to stay out of obligation," he whispered, his thumb caressing her lips. "I wanted you to stay because you chose us. Because this family was broken until you held that ridiculous frying pan and told my son you'd marry him."

A watery, breathless laugh escaped Aurora’s lips amidst her tears. The heavy, suffocating darkness that had wrapped around her life for five long years shattered completely, leaving only warmth and brilliant, blinding light.

"He's waiting for us at home, isn't he?" she asked softly.

Kian’s lips curved into a tender, breathtaking smile that transformed his harsh, scarred features. "He refused to go to sleep until he knew his new mother was safe."

Two hours later, the storm had finally passed, leaving the night sky over the Moretti estate washed in brilliant, starlit clarity.

The house was quiet. The shattered windows had been temporarily boarded, the blood and brass erased, leaving only the warmth of the roaring hearth in the grand master bedroom.

Zayn was fast asleep in the center of the massive king-sized bed, his small arms wrapped tightly around his teddy bear, his breathing deep and peaceful. On the edge of the mattress sat Aurora, having changed out of the emerald gown into a soft, oversized sweater and trousers.

The bedroom door clicked open quietly.

Kian stepped inside, having stripped off his tuxedo jacket and tie. His black shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the sprawling ink across his collarbones. He walked with silent footsteps across the heavy wool rug, stopping beside where Aurora sat.

He looked down at his sleeping son, then turned his gaze to Aurora.

Without a word, Kian reached into his trouser pocket. He withdrew a small, sleek black box—not the velvet one Zayn had carried, but one made of polished ebony wood. He knelt before her on the plush rug, just as he had done in the ruins of the sitting room, just as his son had done in the grease-stained storage closet.

He opened the box.

Resting on the white silk interior was a ring that stole the breath from her lungs. A flawless, pear-cut emerald flanked by two brilliant tapered baguette diamonds, set in pure, gleaming platinum.

"The silver band was a promise from a boy who needed a mother," Kian said, his voice dropping to a low, husky rumble that made her soul vibrate. "This is a promise from a man who needs a queen."

Aurora looked from the glittering jewel up into the fierce, devoted depths of his pale gray eyes. There was no coldness left in him; only the raw, unyielding devotion of a protector who had finally brought his light home.

"Kian..." she breathed.

"I won't keep you in a gilded cage, Aurora," he said softly, taking her left hand in his large, scarred fingers. "If you want to walk away tomorrow, the money, the estate, the freedom—it’s all yours. But if you stay... you will never face the dark alone again."

Aurora looked at the sleeping boy on the bed, whose innocent bravery had saved her life. Then she looked at the man kneeling before her, whose bloody hands were the gentlest things she had ever known.

Slowly, she smiled through a fresh rush of happy tears.

"Take off the silver ring," she whispered.

Kian’s breath hitched. With agonizing care, he slid Zayn’s keepsake ring from her finger, placing it safely on the bedside table. Then, with steady, deliberate reverence, he slid the emerald band onto her finger. It settled against her skin with heavy, perfect permanence.

Kian didn't let go of her hand. He pulled her gently forward, and Aurora slid from the bed onto her knees before him, her arms wrapping around his broad, tattooed neck.

Kian buried his face in the soft crook of her throat, his massive arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as if anchoring himself to the earth.

"I'm not going anywhere, Kian," she murmured into his dark hair, kissing the sharp edge of his jaw. "We're home."

In the warm glow of the firelight, Zayn stirred in his sleep, his little face breaking into a peaceful, dreaming smile.

The wolves had been driven from the gate. The blood debt was paid. And in the heart of the fortress, love had built its throne.
