Chapter 7 - The Breached Gates

*(Title: “A Father’s Fury”)*
The rain had begun to fall in blinding, violent sheets when the unmarked police sedan tore through the wrought-iron security gates of the Vance estate, shattering the hinges with a deafening crash of twisted metal.
Daniel didn’t slow down. He accelerated up the winding cobblestone driveway, throwing the cruiser into park directly against the front porch of the stone mansion.
He stepped out into the torrential rain, soaking wet, his eyes burning with a primal, unstoppable fury that no law, no corrupt judge, and no weapon could contain.
The front doors of the mansion swung open. Two private security guards hired by Vance stepped out onto the veranda, their hands on their holstered handguns.
“Turn around, Miller!” one yelled over the thunder. “You’re trespassing on private property!”
Daniel didn’t speak. He closed the distance in four rapid strides.
When the first guard reached for his holster, Daniel caught his wrist, twisted it with the brutal leverage of a man fighting for his children’s lives, and slammed the guard’s head into the limestone pillar. The man crumpled to the wet stone.
The second guard lunged, but Daniel drove a savage knee into his ribs, sweeping his legs out from under him and sending him crashing down the stairs into the mud.
Daniel picked up the fallen guard’s radio and kicked the heavy oak front doors wide open.
Inside, the grand chandelier illuminated a sweeping marble staircase.
Standing at the top of the stairs, holding a revolver with shaking hands, was Melissa.
“Stay back, Daniel!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Stay back or I swear I’ll shoot you!”
“Where are my children?” Daniel’s voice wasn’t loud. It was a guttural growl that resonated through the floorboards.
“They’re gone, Daniel! It’s over!” Melissa shrieked, backing toward the hallway. “Sarah had everything! She had you, she had this perfect family, she had the money, and what did I get? Leftovers! I took what belonged to me!”
From upstairs, a high-pitched cry shattered the mansion’s silence:
*“DADDY!”*
Lily’s voice.
Daniel took the stairs three at a time.
