Chapter 4 - The Legal Kidnapping

*(Title: “Torn Apart”)*

“I will comply with an inspection,” Daniel said, forcing his voice into razor-sharp calmness, calculating every fraction of a second. “Under New Jersey state law, Title 9, Section 6, an emergency removal without a judge’s signature requires an imminent threat of severe physical harm verified by an attending physician. Show me the warrant signed by a superior court judge, Evelyn.”

Evelyn Vance’s jaw tightened. She raised the clipboard, pointing to an embossed paper. “Judge Henderson signed the temporary custody transfer at 6:45 AM, Daniel. Melissa is designated as temporary kinship guardian until the hearing on Monday.”

Daniel’s mind spun. Henderson was Arthur Vance’s former law partner. The web was deep, airtight, and corrupt to the core.

“No!” Lily began to scream, clinging to Daniel’s jeans. “Daddy! Daddy, don’t let her!”

Officer Miller shoved the door open with his shoulder, snapping the metal chain bracket cleanly out of the dry-rotted door trim.

Daniel moved instantly, placing his entire six-foot-two frame directly between the officers and his weeping children. “Don’t you dare lay a hand on my kids inside my home!”

“Step back, sir!” the second officer shouted, pulling out a pair of steel cuffs.

“Dad!” Ethan screamed, grabbing his father’s arm.

Daniel knew that if he fought them, they would arrest him for assaulting an officer, throw him into a holding cell with no bail, and Melissa would walk away with Ethan and Lily within five minutes. If he was in jail, the children were dead.

He dropped to his knees, ignoring the officer pushing a forearm into his shoulder.

He grabbed Ethan by both cheeks, forcing his terrified son to look into his eyes.

“Ethan. Look at me. Look at Dad,” Daniel whispered with ferocious intensity.

The boy’s eyes locked onto his father’s, tears streaming down his freckled cheeks.

“You are the bravest boy in the world,” Daniel whispered, speaking with urgent precision. “Remember what I taught you about the fire escape plan. Remember Grandma’s cabin by the lake. Do not drink anything she gives you that isn’t sealed. Do you hear me? *Do not drink anything.*”

Ethan swallowed, nodding once with the gravity of a soldier behind enemy lines. “I won’t.”

“Take him!” Evelyn Vance ordered.

Melissa stepped inside the foyer, a hideous smirk flickering across her lips as she reached down and snatched Lily’s arm. Lily shrieked, kicking wildly, her tiny fists striking Melissa’s coat.

“Get off me! Ethan! DADDY!”

Officer Miller twisted Daniel’s arms behind his back, shoving him face-first onto the wooden floor. “Daniel Miller, you are being detained for interfering with a child welfare protective order!”

As the cold steel snapped around Daniel’s wrists, he watched Ethan walk out the front door backward, keeping his eyes locked on his father until the heavy door slammed shut.

Daniel lay pinned against the floorboards Sarah had polished with her own hands.

Then, from the driveway outside, he heard the screech of tires.
