Chapter 3 - The Morning Ambush

*(Title: “The Wolves at the Door”)*
By 7:30 AM, Daniel hadn’t slept a single second.
He had already packed two duffel bags with clothes, passports, cash from the emergency safe, and the firebox. His plan was clear: get the children into the car, drive directly to the State Police headquarters three counties away, and bypass the local precinct where Arthur Vance had political ties.
He walked down the stairs holding Lily in his arms, while Ethan walked glued to his right hip, his backpack slung over both shoulders.
“Are we going to Grandma’s?” Lily asked in a tiny voice, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
“We’re going on a little road trip, sweet pea,” Daniel said softly, kissing her forehead. “Just you, me, and Ethan.”
He reached for the front door handle.
Before his fingers touched the brass lock, three heavy, concussive thuds rattled the door frame.
*BAM. BAM. BAM.*
“Police Department! Open the door!”
Daniel’s blood turned to ice. He pulled Ethan behind him and set Lily down. He looked through the peephole.
Standing on his porch were two uniformed officers from the township precinct, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit carrying a leather clipboard.
And standing behind them, clutching a tissue to her face with a perfectly fabricated expression of agony, was Melissa.
Daniel unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open three inches, keeping the chain latch engaged. “Officers? What is this?”
The lead officer, a burly man with graying temples named Officer Miller, gave Daniel an unblinking, hard stare. “Daniel Miller? Unhook the chain and step outside. We have an emergency court order for child protection.”
“An emergency order for *what*?” Daniel’s voice cracked like thunder.
The woman in the suit stepped forward. “Mr. Miller, I am Evelyn Vance from the County Child Protective Services. We received a high-priority report last night alleging severe physical abuse and domestic endangerment of Ethan Miller and Lily Miller.”
*Vance.* The name struck Daniel like a physical blow.
“Arthur Vance’s daughter,” Daniel said, his eyes narrowing with pure venom. “You’re Arthur’s daughter.”
Evelyn Vance didn’t flinch. Her eyes were stone. “My family connections have nothing to do with the fact that we were provided timestamped video evidence of you violently grabbing your son’s arm, threatening your sister-in-law, and locking your daughter in the basement. Officer, cut the chain if he refuses to comply.”
“Wait!” Ethan’s voice rang out from behind Daniel.
The boy stepped past his father’s legs, right into the narrow gap of the open door.
His eyes locked onto Melissa, who was standing on the lawn pretending to dab tears from her eyes.
“She’s lying!” Ethan yelled, his small hands gripping the frame of the door. “She hurt Lily! She pulled Lily’s hair! Dad never touched us! Aunt Melissa is the monster!”
Melissa let out a theatrical, sobbing gasp. “Officers, see? Daniel has coached him! The boy is terrified of his father’s temper! Look at the marks on his wrist!”
Officer Miller stepped forward, his hand resting on his service weapon. “Daniel, unhook the door now. Do not make this harder than it needs to be in front of your kids.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn Vance. He looked at Melissa’s sneering, triumphant eyes behind the tissue.

They weren’t here to investigate. They were here to legally take his children, isolate them, and tear through his house until they found Sarah’s flash drive.
