Chapter 6 - WHAT DANIEL SIGNED

Daniel finally stopped asking Sarah to trust him.

Instead, he gave investigators everything.

Passwords.

Private servers.

Offshore records.

Contracts.

And signatures.

One document dated seven years earlier gave Eleanor authority to manage “unrecognized descendants.”

Daniel said he believed it concerned inheritance claims.

He hadn’t read it carefully.

Sarah looked at him.

“That excuse is becoming a habit.”

“I know.”

Then came a worse document.

Three years earlier.

After Daniel learned Sophie existed.

A confidentiality agreement.

This one he had read.

It prohibited him from revealing reproductive transfers without trustee approval.

Sarah held the page.

“You knew my daughter existed, and you signed a promise to keep her secret.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel finally told her.

Carter Logistics had criminal exposure.

Bribed contractors.

Improper payments.

Tax manipulation.

Daniel inherited much of it.

Then continued enough of it to make himself vulnerable.

Eleanor threatened to expose him if he told Sarah about Sophie.

“So you chose yourself.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Not Eleanor.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Himself.

Sarah removed any remaining doubt about the marriage.

“You will never come back to me.”

Daniel’s face broke.

“I know.”

Then Whitmore was arrested at a private airfield in Canada.

His laptop contained backups.

Payments to Voss.

False incapacity petitions.

Surrogate records.

Hidden beneficiary agreements.

And audio.

Eleanor:

“If Sarah resists, Daniel will handle her.”

Whitmore:

“And if he doesn’t?”

“He always does when I make him afraid enough.”

Another recording.

Daniel:

“I’m done hiding the children.”

Eleanor:

“No, you’re not.”

“Sarah deserves to know.”

“And when she knows you helped hide Sophie for three years?”

Silence.

“She’ll leave you.”

Daniel answered quietly:

“Maybe she should.”

Sarah stopped playback.

He had known the right thing.

He simply hadn’t done it.

That mattered.

Prosecutors offered Daniel no immunity.

He accepted responsibility for financial conspiracy and obstruction.

He agreed to testify against Eleanor.

Then forensic accountants uncovered another secret.

The $83 million Eleanor moved was not all personal theft.

Nearly $20 million had been transferred into private clinics and adoption agencies.

More children might be involved.

Not necessarily biologically Carter.

Other wealthy families.

Other trusts.

Other hidden beneficiaries.

Sarah stared at Marcus.

“How many?”
