Chapter 1 - THREE KNOCKS

“Please! Don’t hurt the child!”
Sarah Carter’s scream tore through the second-floor hallway.
Daniel had one fist tangled in her long light-brown hair.
With both arms, Sarah locked three-month-old Leo against her chest.
The baby screamed inside his soft blue blanket.
“Give him to me,” Daniel ordered.
“No!”
Sarah hooked her bare feet around the carved leg of the console table.
For a moment, Daniel couldn’t move her.
Then Sarah saw Eleanor.
Her mother-in-law approached slowly in a white silk robe.
Elegant.
Calm.
Almost bored.
“Eleanor!”
Sarah’s voice broke.
“Help me!”
Eleanor stopped beside them.
Her gaze went directly to Leo.
Not Sarah.
Daniel pulled again.
Sarah held on.
Then Eleanor stepped forward.
And kicked Sarah hard between the shoulder blades.
Sarah lost the table.
The marble staircase disappeared beneath her.
She had one second to curl around Leo.
Then she fell.
Shoulder.
Hip.
Back.
Each step sent pain through her body.
But her arms never opened.
When she reached the foyer floor, Sarah could barely breathe.
Leo was crying.
Alive.
Sarah pressed her cheek against his blanket.
“I’ve got you.”
Footsteps descended.
Daniel and Eleanor came down together.
They stopped a few paces away.
Eleanor stared at Leo.
“If they still exist,” she said coldly, “everything will be exposed.”
Sarah froze.
They.
Not he.
Daniel glanced sharply toward his mother.
He understood.
Sarah saw it.
“What does that mean?”
Neither answered.
Daniel began moving toward her.
Slowly.
Sarah tightened her grip on Leo.
Then—
THUD.
Daniel stopped.
THUD.
Eleanor’s face changed.
THUD.
Three heavy knocks struck the front door.
Silence swallowed the foyer.
A man outside called:
“Daniel Carter?”
Eleanor whispered:
“No.”
Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
“Federal agents. Open the door.”
Sarah stared at her husband.
He wasn’t confused.
He knew why they had come.
The doors opened moments later.
Agents entered.
Behind them stood a woman Sarah recognized immediately.
Dr. Helen Morris.
The fertility specialist from Sarah’s IVF treatment.
Helen saw Sarah on the floor.
Saw Leo.
Then looked at Daniel with disgust.
Sarah whispered:
“Why are you here?”
Helen took a breath.
“Because Leo isn’t the first Carter baby they tried to hide.”
May you like
Sarah stopped breathing.
👉 Sarah thought she was protecting one baby from Daniel and Eleanor—but the agents had arrived because three other children carried the same DNA.
