Chapter 8 - The Unbroken Code

The grandfather clock in the brownstone chimed 3:00 AM.
The rain lashed violently against the reinforced windows as Sophie and Alessandro sat shoulder-to-shoulder on the sofa, the letter spread between them. Alessandro’s arm was resting behind Sophie along the cushions, an instinctive, protective presence that she found herself leaning into.
Julian’s handwriting was steady, written in the final weeks before his mind began to fracture.
*“If you are reading this together, then the game has reached its end. Alessandro, I did not steal the ledger. Five years ago, your underboss, Matteo Rossi, forged documents to frame me. He was working hand-in-hand with Senator Thomas Russo. They planned to murder Leo, take the ledger, and blame the Dubois name.”*
Alessandro’s breathing stopped. His entire body turned to ice. "Matteo..." he whispered, a sound of sickening realization. "Matteo has been my right hand for seven years."
Sophie continued reading aloud, her voice trembling:
*“I managed to hide the true ledger in the one place Russo could never reach without my key: the old vault beneath the Moretti shipyard in Brooklyn. But beware—Matteo knows the location. He only lacked the cipher key to unlock the biometric safe. If he discovers you have the music box, he will bring the entire Russo army to that shipyard.”*
Sophie looked up from the paper, tears brimming in her eyes. "My father didn't betray your family, Alessandro. He sacrificed his life to keep them from destroying you."
Alessandro sat in utter, crushing silence for a long moment. The guilt that had haunted him for half a decade—the belief that his mentor had betrayed him, leading to his brother’s bloody execution—shattered into dust, replaced by a cold, incandescent fury that was terrifying to behold.
He stood up, ignoring the searing pain in his bandaged ribs. His dark eyes blazed with a terrifying, absolute clarity.
"Matteo is at the shipyard right now," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "I sent him there three hours ago to secure our secondary extraction route."
Suddenly, the front door downstairs splintered with an explosive roar.
Flashbang grenades detonated in the lower hallway, sending a blinding wave of white light and concussive thunder rattling through the floorboards.
"Boss!" Marco’s voice screamed from the stairwell, immediately followed by the stutter of automatic weapons. "Ambush! It’s Matteo’s men! They breached the perimeter!"
Alessandro grabbed Sophie’s arm, hauling her toward the concealed fire escape behind the bookcase. "Take the key and the letter, Sophie! Run!"
"I'm not leaving you!" she yelled back over the deafening roar of gunfire.
"You have to!" Alessandro snarled, pushing her into the dark stairwell leading to the rooftop. "If they get that key, Julian died for nothing! Get to the docks! Unlock the vault!"
Before Sophie could fight him, two masked gunmen rounded the corner of the landing. Alessandro tackled the first with feral brutality, driving him over the banister, while the second leveled an assault rifle directly at Sophie’s chest.
"Move and you're dead, girl!" the shooter barked.
Sophie didn't think. Driven by pure instinct, she grabbed the heavy brass lamp from the end table and smashed it across the shooter’s helmet with all her strength. The man staggered backward, and Alessandro was on him in an instant, disarming him with a single, brutal twist of his arm.
More boots were pounding up the stairs. Heavy caliber rounds tore through the drywall.
Alessandro pushed Sophie onto the iron fire escape into the pouring rain. "Go, Sophie! Now! I will hold the stairs!"
"Alessandro, please!" she cried, the freezing rain soaking her skin, her fair face drenched in tears.
He looked at her through the open doorway—bleeding, magnificent, and utterly fearless. "I will find you at the docks, Sophie. Keep the raven flying."

He slammed the steel door between them, sliding the deadbolt into place. A second later, the sound of savage close-quarters combat erupted on the other side.
