Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Ledger

By noon the following day, the penthouse felt less like a fortress and more like a high-fashion atelier invaded by a storm.
Racks of haute couture evening wear, imported shoes, and velvet boxes containing millions of dollars in heirloom diamonds lined the grand corridor. Three stylists, working under the terrifyingly silent supervision of Alessandro’s head of security, bustled around Sophie.
When they finally stepped away, Sophie stood alone before a three-sided mirror in the master dressing suite.
She barely recognized the woman staring back. The worn waitress with tired eyes and a loose bun was gone. In her place stood a vision of breathtaking elegance. Her honey-blonde hair had been sculpted into an intricate, tumbling updo with loose tendrils framing her delicate, fair face. Her rosy cheeks were accentuated by subtle makeup, and her hazel eyes looked fathomless beneath darkened lashes.
She wore an emerald-green silk gown with an open back that plunged gracefully toward her waist. The color contrasted stunningly with her fair skin, clinging to her slender curves before pooling around her silver-heeled feet. Around her throat sat a collar of black diamonds—the Moretti family crest, subtle and deadly.
The door behind her clicked open.
Alessandro walked in, fastening the platinum cufflinks of his midnight-black tuxedo. He paused in mid-stride.
For three long seconds, the mafia boss simply stared. The cold, unyielding mask he wore like armor cracked completely. His gaze traced the line of her bare shoulders, the sweep of her throat, the emerald fabric hugging her hips. A sudden, deep heat flared in his dark eyes, heavy and intoxicating.
"You look..." Alessandro began, clearing his throat—a rare sign of hesitation that made Sophie’s heart flutter unexpectedly. "...untouchable."
"I feel like a target," Sophie confessed, looking down at the heavy diamonds at her throat. "I'm pretending to be someone who belongs in your world, Alessandro. But I’m just an archivist's daughter."
Alessandro took slow steps toward her until he stood directly behind her in the mirror. He was towering, magnificent, the epitome of ruthless power dressed in black velvet and silk. He placed his large, warm hands gently on the bare skin of her shoulders. A shiver rippled down her spine at the contact, electrical and intense.
"You don't belong in my world, Sophie," he whispered near her ear, his deep voice sending tremors through her pulse. "My world is rotten with lies, blood, and greed. You are real. That makes you far more dangerous to them than I am."
He turned her around gently so she was facing him. His dark eyes softened into something intensely sincere. "Julian loved you more than his life. When he was dying, he could have sold this cipher to Russo for ten million dollars and lived like a king in South America. He chose poverty and pain just to ensure this legacy came to you. We are going to finish what he started."
Sophie’s eyes stung with unshed tears. For five years, she had felt so utterly alone, carrying the crushing weight of grief while wiping spilled wine off strangers' tables. Now, looking up into Alessandro’s fierce, unwavering gaze, the crushing loneliness lifted.
"What is Lot 414?" she asked, her voice steadying.
"A 19th-century French music box carved from black walnut," Alessandro answered, his thumb lightly grazing the high curve of her cheekbone. The touch was impossibly gentle for a man whose hands carried a trail of bodies. "It was part of my mother’s private collection before the Russos looted our estate during the transition war. Julian knew the code to the lockbox hidden in its base."
"And if the code doesn't work?"
"It will work," Alessandro said, his hand sliding down to clasp hers, his long fingers intertwining with hers. "Because you're going to be the one who whispers it."
A sudden knock at the door broke the spell. Marco stood in the hallway, looking grim.
"Car is downstairs, Boss. Thomas Russo and Camilla have just arrived at the Plaza. The security is three times heavier than usual."
Alessandro’s face snapped back into its terrifying, diamond-hard mask. He let go of Sophie’s hand, offering her the crook of his arm instead.
"Shall we, Miss Dubois?"

Sophie lifted her chin, taking his arm. "Let’s burn their auction down."
