Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Hudson

The crane didn't drop a bomb—it dropped five tons of shipping cables directly onto the transformer bank behind the guards, showering the warehouse in an blinding storm of electrical fire and sparks.

The sudden explosion of light and thunder sent the Russo guards into a panicked frenzy.

In that split second of chaos, Alessandro moved. He had already slipped the lock on his left wrist using a hidden pin hidden beneath his belt buckle. With a roar of primal fury, he ripped the chain from the pillar, wrapped the steel links around the guard beside him, and drove him into the concrete.

"Kill her!" Matteo shrieked, raising his revolver toward Sophie.

Alessandro lunged across the distance like a wounded lion. He caught Matteo’s wrist mid-air, twisting it until bone snapped with a sickening crack. The gun clattered to the floor. Alessandro didn't hesitate; with a cold, terrifying finality, he delivered a crushing strike that sent the traitorous underboss crashing into the darkness, never to rise again.

Across the room, Marco and a convoy of loyal Moretti reinforcements smashed through the warehouse doors, their weapons drawn, instantly surrounding the remaining terrified guards. Thomas Russo fell to his knees in the puddles, hands raised in pathetic surrender, while Camilla shrank against a stack of crates, sobbing hysterically as the zip-ties were locked around her wrists.

The warehouse fell into a heavy, ringing silence, broken only by the sound of the rain tapping against the corrugated tin roof.

Alessandro stood amidst the wreckage, his chest heaving, his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat and blood. He turned slowly.

Sophie was standing near the entrance, lowering the flare. Her gown was ruined, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hazel eyes wide as she looked at him.

Alessandro crossed the warehouse with heavy, unyielding strides. He didn't care about the traitors, the millions in stolen ledgers, or the empire at his back. He stopped inches from Sophie, his large, scarred, tattooed hands reaching out to cup her fair, rosy face.

"You insane, brilliant woman," Alessandro breathed, his deep voice shaking with an emotion he had never shown in his thirty-six years of life. "You came back."

"I told you," Sophie whispered, her voice cracking as a single tear traced down her cheek, leaving a clean path through the soot. "I decode books. And your story wasn't finished yet."

Alessandro pulled her against his chest, wrapping his arms around her so tightly that the world outside ceased to exist. Sophie buried her face into the curve of his neck, feeling the warmth of his skin, the ink beneath her fingertips, and the fierce, steady beat of his heart. For the first time in five years, the ghost of her father was at peace—and she was finally safe.

An hour later, the rain had stopped.

Dawn broke over the Hudson River, painting the Manhattan skyline in brilliant, vibrant hues of rose gold, soft amber, and clear crystalline blue. The river sparkled, washed clean by the night’s violent storm.

Alessandro and Sophie stood at the edge of the private Moretti dock, looking out at the city as it woke. He had a clean black coat draped over his broad shoulders, his ribs freshly tended, standing tall and immovable.

Beside him, wrapped in his heavy suit jacket, Sophie held her father’s notebook.

With a quiet smile, she tore out the first page—the page with the cipher of the raven and the broken key—and watched as the morning breeze caught it, carrying the paper out over the sparkling Hudson waters until it disappeared into the sunrise.

Alessandro looked down at her, his dark eyes softer than anyone in New York would ever believe possible.

"The Russo family is finished, Sophie," Alessandro said quietly. "Thomas is in federal custody, Matteo is gone, and the Moretti ledger is cleared. You have Julian’s trust fund now. You can go anywhere in the world. Paris. London. You can leave this city and never look back at a man like me."

Sophie looked up at him. She looked at the tattoos climbing his neck, the shadows of the violent world he ruled, and the fierce, absolute devotion burning in his eyes—a devotion meant only for her.

She reached out, her slender fingers closing around his scarred, ink-covered hand, intertwining her fingers with his.

"I spent five years running from shadows, Alessandro," Sophie said, her American accent soft, resolute, and clear as crystal. "I'm not running anymore. And I'm not leaving you."

A slow, breathtaking smile broke across Alessandro’s lips—the smile of a king who had finally found his queen. He lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with reverent tenderness as the golden morning sun bathed them both in light.

"Then rule with me, Sophie Dubois," Alessandro whispered against her skin. "And we will make this city bow together."
